We would like to introduce you to Pawsitive Vibes management: Lena and Trax.
Lena and Trax do pretty much everything together, including making sure we're doing our jobs correctly.
Bath time? Both present.
Someone doing something interesting? Both need to investigate.
Staff member potentially deviating from established Lena and Trax procedure? Immediate supervision required.
We're not entirely sure when they were promoted to management, and nobody remembers voting on it, but they take their responsibilities very seriously.

Regular grooming doesn't always mean the coat is okay
She was regularly groomed. We still had to shave her.
Recently we had a senior Newfoundland come to us who had been seeing another groomer regularly, so her family had every reason to believe her coat was being properly maintained.
Unfortunately, once we got into her coat, we found severe undercoat impaction. The loose undercoat hadn't been completely removed over time, and it had become so tightly packed that there was no reasonable or comfortable way to work it all out.
We had to shave her.
This is one of the tricky things about heavily coated breeds like Newfoundlands. From the outside, the coat can look okay. You can run your hand over the top and feel hair. But underneath that outer coat, shed undercoat can stay trapped and continue packing tighter and tighter against the skin.
A proper deshed isn't simply about removing the hair that's ready to fall onto your floor. We need to get all the way through the coat and make sure that loose undercoat is actually releasing from down near the skin.
For this girl, comfort had to come before preserving her coat. Starting fresh was the kindest option available to us.
Her story is also a good reminder that with these big, beautiful double coats, what's happening underneath matters just as much as what we can see on top.

Things dogs are suspicious of for absolutely no reason:
The shampoo bottle they watched us use five minutes ago.
A towel that has apparently become threatening since yesterday.
The dryer hose when it moves by itself.
Their own hair falling off the table.
A noise another dog made three rooms away.
The comb they've encountered approximately 147 times.
Something in the corner that nobody else can see.
And occasionally...
Absolutely nothing.
Just staring suspiciously into the distance because apparently someone needs to remain vigilant around here. 😂

“Can you do the same haircut as this dog?”
Reference pictures are actually really helpful. They show us the overall look you like — round face, shorter ears, fluffy legs, short body, longer muzzle, whatever caught your eye.
But there's one catch.
Your dog's coat gets a vote.
Texture, density, curl, growth direction, cowlicks and the amount of coat available all affect how a haircut sits. Their actual build matters too. Two dogs can be groomed using exactly the same length and still come out looking surpringly different.
It's a bit like taking the same hairstyle to two different human heads. The inspiration can absolutely be the same, but the finished result has to work with the hair — and the individual — that actually showed up.
So please keep bringing us those inspiration pictures. They give us a great starting point. We'll figure out how to translate the parts you love onto your dog.

What's the difference between a Bath & Tidy and a Full Groom?
This one causes a surprising amount of confusion, because a Bath & Tidy is more than just a bath — but it isn't quite a full haircut either.
A Bath & Tidy includes the bath, dry, thorough brush and comb-out, and all the regular grooming basics. We then tidy the areas that tend to get messy first, which can include the face, feet and sanitary areas. What we aren't doing is taking length off the entire body.
For dogs with coats you're trying to grow or keep longer, that thorough brush-out can actually be one of the most valuable parts of the service. It gives us a chance to work through the entire coat between full grooms, catch small tangles before they turn into larger mats, and help keep that longer coat manageable.
It's also perfect for the dog whose body still looks great, but whose face is disappearing, feet are getting shaggy and they're beginning to look a little... feral around the edges. 😂
So a Bath & Tidy isn't just a mini haircut. For dogs wearing longer styles, it can be a really useful maintenance appointment between full grooms — and can make keeping all that beautiful coat a whole lot easier.

Why does the drying part of a groom take so long?
It probably seems like the easy part. Bathe the dog, point a dryer at them, wait until they're dry. Except drying is actually a pretty important part of the groom.
For longer and curly coats, getting the coat properly dried and straightened allows us to see what we're working with and gives us a much smoother, more even haircut. Trying to clip a coat that's still damp or curly is a little like trying to cut wet, crumpled fabric and expecting perfectly straight lines.
Drying also gives us a really good look at the skin. As the air moves through the coat, we can spot things that are much harder to see when all that hair is lying flat — irritation, lumps, little sores, flaky areas or anything else that might be worth mentioning to you.
And then there's the dog themselves. Not every dog thinks a high-velocity dryer is a fabulous invention, so sometimes the drying process is adjusted for the dog. Lower air flow, breaks, different positioning or another drying method can all be part of it.
So when you see your groomer spending what seems like an absurd amount of time drying your dog, they're not just waiting for the water to disappear. A really good finish starts long before the scissors ever come out.

Why does my dog get greasy again so quickly after a bath?
You give your dog a bath, they smell wonderful, their coat feels clean and soft... and three days later you're wondering how they already feel greasy again.
There are actually quite a few reasons this can happen.
Dogs naturally produce oils called sebum that help protect their skin and coat. Some dogs simply produce more than others, but recurring greasiness can also be affected by coat type, product buildup, how thoroughly the coat was rinsed and what's happening with the skin underneath all that hair.
This is also one of those situations where washing more aggressively isn't necessarily better. Using a harsh shampoo or repeatedly trying to strip all of the oil away can leave the skin dry and irritated. A good bath is less about finding the strongest shampoo and more about using the right products, properly diluted, thoroughly working them through the coat and then rinsing extremely well.
If the greasiness comes back very quickly and you're also noticing things like a strong odour, itching, redness, flakes or irritated skin, that's worth mentioning to your veterinarian. Sometimes a greasy coat is more than just a dirty dog.
Otherwise, some dogs are simply talented little grease factories. 😂

Why does my dog rub themselves all over EVERYTHING after grooming? 😂
You know the routine. They get home looking fresh and clean, and approximately twelve seconds later they’re rubbing their face along the couch, rolling across the carpet and generally behaving like they’re trying to undo everything we just did.
There can be a few reasons for it. Dogs experience the world heavily through scent, so after a bath they suddenly smell very different from their usual selves. Rubbing and rolling can be one way of getting back to something that smells a little more familiar.
There’s also the simple fact that rubbing feels good. After being bathed, dried and brushed, a good roll around can be the dog equivalent of changing into your comfy clothes when you get home.
And then there are the dogs who seem to regard a clean coat as a personal challenge. Those are usually the ones who locate the nearest patch of questionable grass before you’ve even made it back into the house. 😂
So if your freshly groomed dog immediately starts enthusiastically redecorating the couch with their entire body... yep. Pretty normal dog behaviour.

Actually, yes.
While grooming can’t diagnose or treat the underlying cause of itchy skin — that’s a job for your veterinarian — we do offer a skin treatment designed to soothe irritated skin and support the skin and coat during the grooming process.
We start with a gentle hypoallergenic shampoo to thoroughly cleanse the coat without adding unnecessary fragrance or ingredients that may further irritate sensitive skin. Any particularly irritated areas are treated with Yves Saint Bernard Mineral Red, followed by CID-BIO over the body.
CID-BIO is an organic apple cider vinegar rinse infused with calendula, lavender, orange peel and marshmallow root. It’s designed to help restore the skin’s natural pH balance and support the skin microbiome, while the botanical ingredients help soothe and condition irritated skin.
Next comes Nagayu CO₂ hydrotherapy. The carbonated rinse reaches right down to the skin and is a really nice addition for dogs dealing with dryness, irritation or generally unhappy skin. Once your dog is completely dry, we finish with a protective spray to help support the skin after the groom.
It’s not a cure for allergies, and we’re never going to promise that a grooming treatment can fix a medical skin condition. But when your dog is itchy and uncomfortable, using products specifically chosen for the skin — rather than simply giving them their regular bath — can make a difference in how their skin feels.
