Everyone talks about what makes a good dog, but no one talks about what makes a good owner.

Providing your dog with food and a home is the bare minimum.

Being a good owner means investing quality time into learning what your dog enjoys, understanding what motivates them and fulfilling their genetic needs.

It means building a strong relationship through clear communication, structure and healthy boundaries.

It means providing a lifestyle that sets your dog up to succeed, rather than placing them in situations they are not prepared to handle.

Most importantly, it means helping your dog work through their struggles instead of constantly avoiding anything that makes them

Before asking whether you have a good dog, ask yourself: Am I being the owner my dog needs?

Your dog does not need friends, they need YOU!

When we talk about building a relationship with your dog, we mean teaching them that engagement, guidance, happiness, trust and value should come primarily from you as their owner. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your dog interacting with other dogs, but those interactions should never become more valuable than the relationship they have with you. Instead of constantly worrying about whether your dog has enough dog friends, focus on becoming the person your dog genuinely wants to engage with, follow, trust and have fun with.

We understand why Board and Train programs can fail.

Sometimes the training is rushed. Sometimes the dog only learns to listen to the trainer. And sometimes the owner is never properly taught how to maintain the progress once the dog comes home.

That is why we have tightened up every part of our program.

We take the time to build real habits, train your dog in different environments, work through the behavioural issues, and make sure the training transfers back to you. We also educate you throughout the process so you understand how to communicate with your dog, maintain structure, and continue building on everything they have learned.

We care about your dog too much to rush the process just to show you quick results. Our goal is to give you the highest chance of being successful together, long after the program is finished.

If your dog isn’t listening to you, the problem might not be the dog. Are you sending mixed signals without even realizing it?

If your dog has already developed anxiety or reactivity, this alone may not help. Your dog’s reactivity has likely made you anxious and reactive too, creating a cycle that can be difficult to break.

This is where professional help matters. The right training should build your dog’s confidence and obedience while also teaching you how to communicate clearly, feel confident and trust your dog again.

Day in the life of APEX

Good dog. Bad dog. It’s all bu****it.

That mindset gives people an excuse to avoid responsibility. If the dog is labelled “good,” they trust them to make human decisions. If something goes wrong, suddenly the dog is “bad,” as if the behaviour appeared out of nowhere.

Meanwhile, babies and children continue to be seriously injured or killed because adults give dogs too much freedom, ignore warning signs and leave safety up to the dog.

Dogs and children learn through consequences, repetition, association and everything happening around them. That includes operant conditioning, classical conditioning and the behaviours we reinforce without even realizing it.

As adults, we are responsible for teaching, guiding, managing and protecting them. We can shape them into the best version of themselves, or contribute to the very behaviours we later blame them for.

There is no good dog or bad dog. There is no good child or bad child. There is behaviour, learning and the responsibility we have to raise them properly.

Share this. Help change the mindset. It could genuinely save a life.
