🦟 June 1st marks the first day of heartworm prevention! 🐶🐱
Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes. When a mosquito bites an infected animal, it can pick up tiny baby heartworms called microfilariae. That same mosquito can then pass the larvae to another dog or cat through a bite. Over time, those larvae grow into worms that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels.
Heartworm disease can cause coughing, trouble breathing, fatigue, weight loss, and in severe cases, heart failure. Cats can also be affected, even indoor cats. Often times, there are no symptoms at all. Which is why we recommend yearly testing!
The good news? Prevention is easy - and much safer (and less expensive) than treatment. Starting prevention on time is one of the best ways to protect your pets this mosquito season. ❤️
