Update on Pumpkin and Spice

They’re growing and gaining personality everyday!!

Energetic, demanding and playful little beans. Now pouncing, gaining coordination, and cleaning themselves.

Currently eating mush and loving it 😻😻

Had a few diarrhea poops after starting the mush but had some perfect poops tonight!! Yay!

‼️Update… due to some comments I’d like to make some point form clarifications…‼️

❤️all possible wildlife contacts were contacted
🐾Pembina would not accept
🐾Bridgewater was temporarily closed and not accepting wildlife as per voicemail when calling
🐾wildlife haven was closed and said to call bridgewater… which as above was closed!
🐾conservation was who I spoke to.
‼️CONSERVATION gave me the Permission and Instructions. Which I followed! ‼️
🤬not only did I “wash my hands” after… the entire vehicle was sanitized, the blanket was disposed of in biohazard and my clothing all went directly into the wash while I went and showered!
🐾 💞I and my team regularly put our own lives at risk when we are helping animals, it’s what we do. We follow protocols as best we can and our focus is always the animal in need. 💞🐾

tried to take a day to refresh, not forget but set aside, and recharge from an insane two weeks of bottle babies, losses, quick and prolonged, crash of new intakes and the general day to day of it all…

Then as I’m driving along… a goose… a young, small Canada goose. Clearly in distress, not moving well and struggling.
I am physically and mentally unable to simply leave it there to suffer. It could be illness, injury, human or natural… I don’t know. But leaving it to simply flip flop was not ok. 😔

I was able to pick it up and safely bundle it in a blanket. I called rehabbers, conservation and rescues. No one was available.

Finally conservation called me back and was highly concerned that the bird may be infected with avian flu and to return it to its flip/flop/suffering… I asked politely if rather than leave it if there was a humane way to quickly dispatch the goose so it was no longer suffering. The officer gave me permission and strict instructions and I quickly ensured the animal was no longer suffering. I know this is not a popular opinion and many may condemn me for it, but I could not leave this animal to slowly suffer and die.

Our primary focus is cats and dogs, but we will always step up to advocate for all animals.

Following the interaction extensive sanitation protocols were followed for all involved, every surface and contact position plus some.

Hopefully this bird understood that I was helping it the best way I was able to and it can continue to fly free without issue. 💕🐾@

I’m feeling so blessed!! 🥹

What an amazing team of humans from different rescues coming together!!

Doe, our little baby who was found being abused by some children and picked up by a Good Samaritan has found a soft landing after a couple of hectic days of new things!!

Isabella who took her in and kept her safe until we could make it out to richer to retrieve Doe. Powell and Save A Dog Network Canada for jumping to action and finding an out of province rescue and booking a flight and to sit with me rescue for intaking Doe to find her a loving home!!

Without each of these humans and groups who knows where Doe could be now?

We chose the name Doe for several reasons.
- she looks like a little doe (a female deer 🎶)
- she came to us as a “Jane Doe”
- our beloved Beau who regularly went by
“Bo-Bo-the-do-do” when he was feeling silly. Passed away the same day she fell into our arms.

We do not need any funds for Doe, but our rescue partners that took her in may. We do still have a fairly large outstanding bill for Beau with Animal Hospital of Manitoba if anyone would like to donate even $2, it all adds up!!

🐾💞🥺Today we said goodbye to Beau💞🐾

Beau was declining quickly and let us know he was ready to say goodbye.

A huge thank you to the veterinary team at AHOM for being so kind and compassionate and for shedding tears alongside us. This was not the end anyone wanted, but the sweet boy is now at rest.

Thank you to all who reached out with kind words, donations and messages of love.

To honour Beau and his love for baby animals we picked up a sweet baby in need today and have named her “Doe”.

- Jane Doe
- Beau-Do (dough)
- and she looks like a fawn or doe

Doe will be heading to another rescue as we are full atm and are taking some time to grieve.

Finally a reminder to be kind, as you never know what someone else is going through.

We took in these two bottle babies, Pumpkin & Spice and goodness are they adorable!

Also a lot of work!! We have had to purchase KMR and bottles for them, feedings every few hours but all is looking good for them!!

Sometimes people don’t understand all that it takes to intake an animal in need and the sacrifices that VOLUNTEER staff make everyday to help these animals.

Please be patient with the humans involved in rescue and know we are all trying and that none of us like or want to say “NO” but that it is becoming more and more necessary…

𝗔 𝗠𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗔𝗚𝗘 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗥…..

𝗚𝗙𝗔𝗥’𝗦 𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗬 𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗔 𝗪𝗜𝗟𝗟 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗕𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗨𝗦𝗘 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗘𝗫𝗧 𝗙𝗘𝗪 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗛𝗦.

Our emergency holding area needs a full revamp — not only of the space itself, but of the volunteer team, policies and procedures surrounding how it operates.

Because of this, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱. We will only be able to accept animals when we have an appropriate foster home available.

I also need to be transparent about why we need this time.

𝗜’𝗺 𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝘀’ 𝗲𝗻𝗱.

As the founder, I handle almost every aspect of GFAR with the help of only a handful of amazing volunteers and our incredible foster team. The number of intake requests we receive is overwhelming, but the way we are sometimes treated when we cannot immediately say yes has made it even harder.

We tell people we have no space. We offer to look for a foster and promise to reach out if one is found. Instead of allowing us the time to do that, we are often met with back-to-back messages, pressure, anger and, in some cases, threats that an animal will be harmed if we don’t take them.

𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻. 𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁.

Right now, we also need fosters for the animals still in our emergency holding area so we can begin this revamp. Most are cats who need time, patience and socialization so we can determine whether they are adoptable or better suited for our working cat program.

Over the next few months, our focus will be on rebuilding this part of GFAR, creating a solid and reliable volunteer team, and caring for the animals already depending on us.
