Congratulations to Humane Canada who worked tirelessly on this win!

BREAKING: Together, we changed the law for animals! πŸŽ‰
Bill C-16 received Royal Assent last night, strengthening protections for animals harmed as part of interpersonal violence and criminalizing the distribution of animal sexual abuse images. Humane Canada has been working toward this moment for years, and you helped make it happen.

Thank you to everyone who spoke up and to Justice Canada and Minister Fraser for championing this historic legislation.

This victory belongs to every supporter who showed up for animals. 🐾

Did you know we care for more than dogs and cats? You can find critters and birds here too, like Cashew!
Read Cashew's story (from their new family, who is on our staff!), it just might inspire you to adopt a little bird πŸ₯ΉπŸ¦. Right now, we have three budgies waiting for their forevers.

"Cashew had a very exciting few days before I adopted him! He was posted to Reddit because he flew into a person's garage, and they were able to recognize he was a non-native bird, so they closed the garage door before he could fly out. I reached out to provide assistance through messages on how to catch him, and then ended up going down to help!

The finder and I decided on the name Cashew together! It's really lucky for him that he flew into the finder's garage when he did too, because we had that freak storm a few days later; it could have been an entirely different outcome for him.

I've had parrots and pigeons all my life, but Cashew is my first Finch! He is settling in well, and has a LOT of energy. He loves to zip around his flight cage, and even plays games with himself! I watched him for 30 minutes once where he was consciously jumping on every 2nd rung on his ladder, would turn around, and then go to the other end. It seriously looked like he was playing hopscotch by himself. He also loves to take naps in his nest or play on his swing, and when he's really happy he makes his 'radio transmission' noises. Cashew isn't too fond of my hands, so we're still working on that.

Cashew and my Indian ringneck parrot, Dranzer, are both housed in my room, but in separate cages and aren't allowed to interact with each other. They see each other, and know of each other. As Dranzer is much larger, and also a hookbill parrot, if something were to go wrong, he could potentially injure Cashew. Dranzer is also really jealous of his new younger brother, but he's slowly getting used to it! When Dranzer is out, I make sure to cover Cashew's cage (just in case, for safety!)"

If you're thinking of becoming a bird parent, come down and chat with our adoptions team!

Are you looking for a dog who is actually a cat? Icey is your girl!
She loves to snuggle up on a couch for belly rubs, and is happy to lounge all day. At 2-years-old and tiny, she's nervous about new people and places, but once she gives you the okay, she's loyal as can be.

Icey would do best with no kids, or kids who are older and dog-savvy, as she needs a calm space to feel safe.

If you want to save this pint-sized beauty and give her her second chance, come meet her asap.
No room in your home? Share her story and help us find her family!!

Can you believe our sweet Shyla is still waiting for her family? This girly pop is almost 8-months-old and is bouncy and fun! She LOVES other dogs and definitely wants a buddy. She can come on strong so if you have a confident, tolerant dog looking for a little sister, this might be your girl.

Shyla's been working on her manners with our incredible behaviour team, and our time with her in the yard is such a joy. She loves the pool, and now just needs it to be in your backyard!

Come meet her today and gear up for the best summer, or share this so we can find Shyla's forever home!

Sweet and timid senior Zoe is looking for a place to live out her forever. At a very healthy 14-years-old, she's up for long chats with a buddy, and just sitting in peace and quiet.

Zoe loves people, and doesn't deserve to spend a moment longer alone in the shelter. Come take her home!

She also qualifies for our Seniors for Seniors program, with a reduced fee for adopters aged 55+.

Cats 5+ yrs: $20
Cays 10+ yrs: $10

Tiny yet thoughtful actions can make such a huge impact on the health of our pollinators. Even a small flowerpot or garden patch of native wildflowers can provide a valuable habitat for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds!

Here are a few native species you can plant this summer - yes there's still time!
Showy Milkweed
Joe-Pyed W**d
Smooth Blue Aster
Prairie Buttercup

For more info on your local pollinators and how you can help, check out the David Suzuki Foundation's resources: https://davidsuzuki.org/living-green/what-native-plants-attract-pollinators-in-the-prairies/
