Yesterday was our survey deadline for Winnipeg candidates to share their stance on repealing Breed Specific Legislation in the city. We are happy to report that the majority of responders are FOR repealing BSL, or they support a formal review.
Unfortunately, we did not hear from a lot of major candidates.

We will be doing a comprehensive breakdown for you next week, but for now you can visit our page for full responses, and what you should be asking the candidates in your area.

Senior cat stories really get us 🥹😭.

"I adopted Shmokie (formerly Gracie) on October 3rd back in 2020.

I remember coming in hoping for a kitten, or at most one year old cat. The adoption counsellor that showed me around said I should check out one of the senior cats who had been there for a little while and that’s when I was introduced to Shmokie. She was 7 years old at the time and my first pet. I remember thinking that by adopting an adult cat I may be missing out, or unable to build a special bond with her because she was already an adult cat with her own personality.

Looking back I could not have been more wrong. Shmokie is the most perfect companion I could have ever asked for. From day one she has been my little best friend & shadow, watching and growing alongside her over the years has shown me just how much life and personality adult/senior cats can truly have.

Adopting an adult cat from the Humane Society is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I am forever grateful for the adoption staff, volunteers, and all the other amazing people who work for the Winnipeg Humane Society all you guys do for the community.

Thank you all for advocating for the little ones who don’t have a voice, and working so hard to find them all a perfect home. I’ve added some photos of Shmokie & I from the first night she came home, and of her recent 13th birthday party. "

Simpson is a sweet 3-year-old boy who has shown us that the way to his heart is through his stomach!

He is very treat-motivated, making snacks a great way to build trust and create positive connections. Simpson would thrive in a patient, understanding home that allows him to settle in at his own pace. With time, consistency, and a calm environment, he can begin to feel comfortable and confident in his new surroundings, and become a very loyal friend.

If you have a little patience, a lot of tasty treats, and a heart willing to give Simpson the time he needs, you could be the perfect match for this special boy 🥹.

Meet Makwa, truly one of the sweetest dogs to come through our doors. He's sleek and wiggly and ready to make friends, be they human or other dogs!

He's had plenty of playdates and adventures after spending time in foster with some dog buddies, and is looking for a home that will continue to love him and support his health routine, with his special diet.

Last week there was a tragedy at Assiniboia Downs: another death of a horse right after a race.

When horrible accidents like this happen, we must pause and reflect on how we can better safeguard these animals who are not only great athletes, but great companions, and do not deserve to be put in situations where people profit off risk and inhumane treatment.

Thankful for our community partners, and the team who made our One Health clinic in Split Lake possible earlier this month. We provided much needed veterinary care to a total of 90 animals in only 2.5 days!
