Today is the Autumn Equinox! As the season turns, we want to help keep pet owners informed so your furry friends can enjoy the crisp fall days safely. With Thanksgiving and Halloween both on the horizon, keep an eye out for these common seasonal hazards:

𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀:

• Halloween Treats (chocolate & xylitol are toxic to pets)
• Thanksgiving Leftovers (rich, fatty foods like turkey skin & gravy can cause pancreatitis)
• Seasonal Spices (nutmeg & certain baking spices can be harmful in large amounts)
• Wild Mushrooms & Onions/Garlic (both toxic if ingested on walks or in the yard)

𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀:

• Antifreeze (sweet-tasting but deadly if leaked or spilled)
• Acorns (can cause GI upset or blockages if swallowed)
• Foraging Wildlife (raccoons and other critters may carry parasites or diseases)

We're looking for donations of gently-used newspaper to help keep our patients safe, clean, and comfortable while they're in our care. Newspaper is an important everyday resource in our hospital and helps us provide the best possible environment for our patients!

The next time you're getting rid of newspaper that is no longer needed, we'd be so grateful if you kept us in mind! Donations can be dropped off at 400 Pembina Hwy, during our regular business hours.

𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗬 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗗𝗢𝗚 𝗗𝗔𝗬! 🐕🐶🐾

Today, we're celebrating those who make our lives a little brighter, a little sillier, and a whole lot fuller. For many of us, they're so much more than pets – they're family, loyal companions, adventure buddies, and sometimes even little extensions of ourselves. They comfort us when we need it most, greet us at the door, and bring so much joy into our everyday lives!

We're so thankful to every family who entrusts their precious dogs to our care. It's an honour to be a part of their lives and to care for them alongside you. We hope you're having the best day ever with your goodest boys and girls 💙 Give them a treat from us!

Please be advised of the WHS’s current intake freeze.

During this time, we’re unfortunately unable to accept owner-relinquished animals.

We appreciate your understanding & patience ❤️‍🩹

Our holding areas are currently at capacity, and we are having to implement a temporary intake freeze, prioritizing critically sick and injured animals.

For context, last year we took in 4,893 cats & kittens alone. Most healthy cats may only spend a few days with us waiting for their adoption, but even at that, care for each cat can cost between $200-$300. This number only rises with medical and behavioural cases, with longer stays and more resources needed to care for them.

The external funding we receive covers only a portion of these resources, and for the rest, we rely on donations from our community.

We don't make these decisions lightly - while funding is critical to operate, our capacity also looks at our ability to care for these animals. Our clinic teams working long hours, animal care and behaviour teams being stretched incredibly thin, and using adoption rooms as overflow for holding.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY-June 4th, 2026- PLEASE READ

For the past 19 years, We have been running PWRC as a volunteer based charity. Over the last 15 years, we have admitted and rehabilitated more than 2,000 animals annually.

As you know, every year brings new challenges and changes related to volunteers, funding, donations, politics, staffing, and the increasing costs of wildlife rehabilitation, including food, medical care, and facility maintenance. After much consideration, we have made the difficult decision to begin winding down the organization.

This summer will be our final operating season. Effective Thursday, June 4th, we will no longer be admitting new wildlife patients. If you come across an injured and orphaned wildlife, please contact :

Our focus will be on completing the rehabilitation of the animals currently in our care at the St. Adolphe site. We will continue to rely on community support to care for the wildlife patients still in our care—especially the four fox kits, who require a specialized diet to grow and thrive. Their expected release will be in August/September.

Every donation helps ensure these young animals receive the proper nutrition and care they need for a successful return to the wild. Thank you for being part of their journey.

This has been an incredibly difficult decision, but we are proud of the work we have done and the effort we have made to help injured and orphaned wildlife over the years.

We would like to extend a huge and heartfelt thank you to Pembina Veterinary Hospital and Winnipeg Emergency Veterinary Clinic for nearly 20 years of dedicated support as a trusted wildlife drop-off location for PWRC.

Because of your compassion and commitment, thousands of animals have received a second chance at life through our doors. Your long-standing partnership has made an incredible impact on wildlife in our community, and we are truly grateful.

🚨 𝗨𝗥𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘 – 𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 🚨

As of today, June 3, 2026, Prairie Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre will no longer be accepting new wildlife patients. This is a difficult but necessary decision, made so that current patients can continue to receive the quality of care they deserve.

If you come across an injured or orphaned wild animal, our colleagues at Bridgwater Veterinary Hospital and Wellness Centre are still able to accept wildlife cases, which will then be transported to Wildlife Haven for treatment. Patients can also be dropped off directly at their campus in Ile des Chênes.

As we continue undergoing renovations to improve our space and better serve you and your pets, we wanted to share a quick update on what to expect during this period:

🚐 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – Due to construction impacting our regular reception area, a, trailer is set up in our parking lot to assist clients

🐾 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 – Now drop-off style: please call when you arrive, we will bring your pet inside, and you’re welcome to wait in your car or head home

🛍️ 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 & 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝗸-𝗨𝗽𝘀 – Available at the reception trailer

⏳ 𝗢𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀 – Some orders may take longer than usual to arrive
