On all days, and this day in particular (also known as Orange Shirt Day), Walkies Pet Sitting acknowledges that where we conduct our business (Winnipeg) is Treaty 1 territory and derives its name from a Cree word meaning Muddy Waters. This crossroads of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers is a historic gathering place for the Anishinaabeg, Inninewak, Anishinewak, Nêhiyawak, Dakota Oyate, and Denesuline, and the birthplace and homeland of the Red River Métis.
We further acknowledge that the water we rely on for our own and our pets’ well-being is sourced from Shoal Lake in Treaty 3 territory and has been cared for by First Nation people there for thousands of years.
We recognize the harms done upon these lands and its first peoples as a result of colonial practices and seek to do better, moving forward with respect, and with open hearts and minds.
