Three years ago today, after a devastating diagnosis, I kissed the top of your head, told you I loved you and then held you tight as you crossed the rainbow bridge.

Unexpectedly losing my 1 year old dog was heart wrenching, and to be honest, I did not predict the grief to be as painful as it was.

Most people with a dog will see their dog more than any person. They are there for us after long days, hard days, sad days and great days. They welcome us with joy and excitement, more than any human ever has. They make such an impact in such a short amount of time. They are the ultimate companions.

When Sace passed, someone said to me “at least you have two other dogs at home”... Yes, I had the girls at home, but Sace passing left a void in our home that could never be replaced. He was simply one of a kind.

To this day I miss the high pitched squeak he would make when he yawned. I miss the way he would curl up beside me. I miss his goofy antics and beautiful soul. I miss him.

Today I completed my KPA provisional, and I would like to think there is something symbolic about it being hosted today. I would like to think that Sace was there in spirit, after all, K9 Fuel wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for him.

So here’s your reminder that life is short and a dogs life is even shorter.

Hug them tight, give them the extra piece of chicken off your plate, let them snuggle you on the bed, laugh at the goofiness and let go of any frustration.

Enjoy every moment & cherish the love they share. We can learn a lot from them. 🤍

Today I am 26 ✨

I launched K9 Fuel just before my 24th birthday, and my goodness what a wild ride these past two years have been!

I have connected with so many incredible trainers and pet parents, expanded on my education, worked with a variety of dogs and now am working my dream job with an incredible foundation & Guide Dogs.

Thank you to everyone on here that has either utilized services, shared posts, engaged in content or just messaged to say hey! I appreciate everyone on here and nothing brings me more joy than watching dogs thrive & succeed. ❣️

One year ago today Rocky and Tango tragically lost their lives at a Winnipeg daycare facility. With proper protocols in place, these two boys would still be here today.

The most disappointing part? This specific facility faced no consequences, and never even shared its deepest regret for the incident with the family impacted.

The dog industry is completely unregulated and unfortunately, anyone can open a facility and pack as many dogs as they want into a room and call it a daycare, boarding, or training business.

While all dog businesses may not see eye to eye, I know that all passionate and educated dog industry workers never want to hear of another tragic loss due to neglect of care.

Here are some things to consider when signing your dog up for any form of care, whether that be daycare, boarding, or training:

•Staff Qualifications
•CPR Training
•Capacity
•Ratio
•Addressing Behaviour
•Values
•Introductions
•Bathroom Breaks
•Tools
•Downtime
•Sanitation
•Health & Safety
•Honesty

Just as you would interview a babysitter for your children, you need to interview the facility that cares for your dog. Ask as many questions as you need, and if they seem bothered by the questions, it is probably not a good fit.

Trust your gut! Some places may seem like a dream and have perfect answers to all the questions, but if you feel something is off, or the number of dogs in a room at once concerns you, it is probably a good idea to look elsewhere.

Check out their social media! Look for photos posted, how many dogs are in the area? Can you see the staff around? How does the body language of the dogs in the photos appear?

With all this being said, some facilities will lie. I know, it’s awful, but it is also the unfortunate truth.

In a perfect world, families wouldn’t need to heavily interview facilities, because, with proper regulations in place, there would be a standard of care to ensure no dog loses their life when away from home.

🚘 Parking lots are one of my favourite places to work dogs! You can create as much distance as needed to keep the dog under threshold while working on their training.

Today Gary and I worked around the Costco and Pet Land parking lots to work on leash reactivity.

Gary successfully worked around people, carts, cars, and dogs! 🐶

We started his training by working inside a vehicle and worked up to being at the back of the lot to and then gradually moved closer to triggers. (This was done over a week, keeping sessions short & successful!)

⬇️ Decreasing the distance between triggers will depend on the dog, and remember, dogs cannot learn successfully when they are over threshold 🙅‍♀️
