I think this is something that needs to be talked about more as dachshunds become more and more popular.

If barking is something that is going to bother you, a dachshund may not be the right breed for you.

Dachshunds bark. They were bred to alert, hunt, and let their people know when something is going on. Some bark more than others, but finding a dachshund that never barks is about as rare as finding a unicorn.

I get messages all the time asking if a puppy is going to bark. The honest answer is probably yes. Maybe not constantly, maybe not excessively, but they are a vocal breed by nature.

Because I care deeply about where my puppies go, I take this seriously. If someone is looking for a dog that rarely barks, I am probably not the breeder for them. I’d rather be honest upfront than place a puppy in a home that isn’t a good fit.

The same goes for potty training. Dachshunds are wonderful, loving, hilarious little dogs, but they can be stubborn. They are smart enough to learn the rules and stubborn enough to decide they don’t always want to follow them.

At Cherished Dachshunds, we love dachshunds for exactly who they are. We don’t expect them to be silent, perfect little robots. We expect them to be dachshunds.

If you’re looking for a loyal companion with a huge personality, a dachshund might be perfect for you. If you’re looking for a dog that never barks, never digs, and never has an accident in the house, this probably isn’t the breed for you.

And that’s okay. Not every breed is the right fit for every family. ❤️🐾

This morning I want to talk about what happens when a puppy goes home.

One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that an 8 week old puppy should already know everything. The truth is, when our puppies leave here, they are still babies.

Imagine being a little baby and suddenly being taken away from your mom, siblings, familiar smells, routine, and the only home you’ve ever known. That’s exactly what happens when a puppy goes home. It’s a huge adjustment, and they’re trying to figure out their new world.

For the first few days, and sometimes even a few weeks, it’s completely normal for puppies to cry, whine, and seem confused. They miss their mama, their littermates, and everything they’ve known since birth.

They’re also not potty trained. At 8 weeks old, their little bladders are tiny and they don’t fully understand where they’re supposed to go. Accidents are going to happen. A lot.

And if you’ve ever owned a Dachshund, you know they can be especially stubborn when it comes to potty training. Some catch on quickly, while others take months of consistency, patience, and routine. Potty training is not usually something that’s finished in a couple of weeks.

Then there’s the chewing and biting phase. Puppies explore the world with their mouths. They chew, nip, bite shoelaces, fingers, furniture, blankets, and pretty much anything they can reach. This is normal puppy behavior and part of learning. The teething stage can last several months, so patience and redirection are important.

A puppy isn’t being bad. They’re being a puppy.

Before bringing home any puppy, especially a Dachshund, it’s important to understand that raising one takes time, patience, consistency, and realistic expectations. There will be accidents. There will be sleepless nights. There will be chewing. There will be moments when you wonder what you’ve gotten yourself into.

But if you stay patient and work with them, that little puppy grows into your best friend.

And if you truly feel overwhelmed or realize a puppy isn’t the right fit for your home, please reach out to your breeder. A responsible breeder would much rather help find a solution or take a puppy back than have that puppy end up in a bad situation.

Puppies are a commitment, not a convenience. Give them grace, give them time, and remember they’re learning just like we are.

And remember, the crazy puppy stage doesn’t last forever, even though it sometimes feels like it will. One day you’ll look back and miss those tiny puppy kisses, puppy breath, and silly little zoomies. The days can feel long, but the puppy stage is actually very short. Before you know it, that wild little baby who drove you crazy will be curled up beside you on the couch, following you everywhere, and stealing your heart. ❤️

New peer-reviewed study shows 100% of bird nests tested contained residues of flea and tick chemicals from pets. These chemicals were found not just in nest lining made from treated pet fur, but also in eggs and dead chicks. Researchers also observed that higher contamination levels in nests were associated with more unhatched eggs and chick mortality signals, suggesting a clear exposure pathway from pets to wild birds through nest building materials.

In simple terms, wild birds may be unintentionally exposing their embryos and chicks to pet parasite treatments.

This adds a concerning layer during a period of ongoing bird declines, but it is important to note it is not considered a primary driver. Major causes of bird population declines in Europe and North America are still habitat loss and fragmentation, insect decline and food shortages, climate change, and intensive agricultural practices.
