Today we said a very sad goodbye to our beloved sweet cookie love muffin Oreo.
Oreo has been with us for 16 years.
He took on the role of greeter and made every single person and hundreds of animals feel loved.
Oreo was meant to be with us.
He arrived at our doorstep in 2010 and pooped behind our dryer.
We put up flyers and kept him indoors, safe from traffic and the train behind my apartment.
His owners claimed him
We gave him back and missed him.
He arrived back at our door the next morning.
We would be moving soon.
We couldn't leave this boy behind. He wanted so badly out of the environment he was in that he would get in delivery vehicles and go with anyone who showed him affection.
I wrote a letter to the owner and explained how much we loved his cat and promised to take such good care of him.
I offered him all that was left of my osap money that year, $400, for Oreo.
He accepted.
2 weeks later that man burned his house down with all 4-5 other pets plus children inside.
The children were rescued by neughbours and firefighters but all the pets passed horribly. Except Oreo.
Over 16 years, we got him through recurring urinary issues that almost took his life and learned so much along the way. We traveled the country together. We read together, napped together, wiped his drool off together. We fed him his favourite foods and last night we cleaned his bloody vomit off the entirety of our kitchen floor.
Oreos special talent was sensing prey drive in dogs. If we had a guest dog coming and couldn't see Oreo near the front door, guaranteed that dog is not safe with cats.
Until his mind and his sight began to leave him, he was there for us and with us.
Our family is one heartbeat smaller today.
If you've ever been in our home or doorway, you've probably had Oreo climb your leg or jump right up into your arms.
Please give our special guy a moment of your thoughts today.
He mattered and so do you.
