YUCK - WE HAVE LICE
Today we discovered that at least one dog at the shelter has lice. While this is yucky and inconvenient it is a part of life when you have animals.
The dog has been with the shelter for quite awhile so we really don’t know how he got lice, as he did not have lice when he had an earlier vet check.
What does this mean for the shelter?
The back will remain closed for 3-4 weeks while we treat all the dogs and manage bagging and washing bedding. We will still allow dogs to go for walks and dogs can be adopted. This is up to our volunteers and potential adopters. Many of the dogs will not have lice, nor will they get it, but out of an abundance of caution we are treating all the dogs in the shelter. Dogs can also be adopted and stay at the shelter until treatment is finished as well if that is better suited to the adopters.
We will mainly be closed to intakes as well, unless an emergency.
Lice is species specific, so there is no risk of humans or cats, other animals catching canine lice. However if you have other dogs at home, you may want to avoid walking or hanging out with our dogs until they have been through a few treatments.
We have reached out to anyone that has adopted or taken a shelter dog into foster over the last week as well. If you have a dog that you have adopted or fostered previous to that.. And if it is showing signs of infection, please reach out to us.
