WISE CANINE COMMUNITY GUIDELINES
Our Trainers use only positive, ethical training methods supported by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) and the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB).

โ€‹Many methods of changing behavior in dogs are effective; however, Wise Canine Trainers and Behavior Consultants are concerned not just with what is effective but what does the least harm and produces the best long-term
results. Current studies on dog training methods show a clear advantage of reward-based methods over aversive-based methods with respect to immediate and long-term welfare, training effectiveness, and the dog-human relationship. Comments promoting the use of pain, intimidation and training tools designed to be aversive will be deleted immediately without warning. Examples include collar corrections, choke collars, prong collars, shock collars (e-collars), alpha rolls, hitting, yelling/scolding. Comments promoting businesses who use or actively promote the use of aversive training methods and tools will be deleted without warning.

We have some exciting news for a repair of the shelter that will make a big difference.. however we will need some help to make it happen.

The floors in our kennel areas need to be redone, and Cutting Edge Flooring has kindly offered to do the work at a huge discount.

However to do this we need to find short term fosters for the dogs that will be in our care as they will need to be out of the building for 1-2 weeks.

The work is scheduled to start on Aug 31st.

Another option would be portable constuction fencing that we could use to house some dogs outside during the work.

We will not know what dogs need foster until close to the day as our population changes. However we want to get started on a list of people that think they can help during those dates, so that we can reach out around Aug 27th to figure placements out.

If you think you can help... please email [email protected]

Dog training advice has been passed down for generations.

But just because something has been around forever doesn't mean it's a good idea. ๐Ÿ˜…

Here are a few classics we'd happily retire:

โŒ "A tired dog is a good dog."
A dog who is fulfilled by enough and the right type of exercise is a good thing, but using excessive exercise as a strategy to outrun behavioural concerns is not the right way to go. While a tired dog may be less likely to engage in some behaviours, a case of the sleepies can also lead to increased reactivity, aggression, puppy biting and anxiety. Most dogs need a well-rounded approach to feel their best.

โŒ "Teach him who's boss."
Your dog isn't plotting a hostile takeover of the living room. Most unwanted behaviours happen because a dog is excited, worried, confused, or because the behaviour has been reinforcedโ€”not because they're trying to become CEO of your household.

โŒ "Ignore behaviour you don't like."

Behaviour always has a reason behind it. The trick isn't ignoring itโ€”it's figuring out why it's happening and teaching a better alternative. Depending on the behaviour and how long it's been reinforced, flat out ignoring can lead to frustration, increased fear or damage to your relationship.

โŒ "Hold his paws when he jumps up."
Or hold their mouth shut when they bite.
Or hold their muzzle when they bark.

These all have the same problem: they rely on making your dog uncomfortable instead of teaching them what to do instead. They can also teach dogs that having people grab their body, feet, or face is unpleasant or even scaryโ€”which is the exact opposite of what we want for handling, grooming, and veterinary care.

โŒ "Let them cry it out."
Whether it's a brand-new puppy in a crate or a dog struggling with being alone, crying is communication. It's up to us to help them learn to feel safe so they don't feel the need to cry out. Ignoring distress doesn't create resilience.

The best training advice doesn't just stop unwanted behaviour. It builds confidence, trust, and skills that last a lifetime.

You spent weeks looking at puppy photos.

You imagined peaceful cuddles.
Cute walks.
Tiny snores.

Instead...

You've been bitten 847 times today.
You're questioning whether your puppy has ever actually slept.
You just pulled a sock out of their mouth for the fourth time.
And you're wondering if you've accidentally adopted a caffeinated velociraptor. ๐Ÿฆ–

Welcome to the puppy blues.

More people experience them than you'd think, but almost nobody talks about it.

The lack of sleep, constant supervision, potty accidents, biting, and feeling like you're doing everything wrong can leave even the most prepared puppy owners wondering, "What have I done?"

Here's the good news: you're not failing.

Puppies are hard. Really hard.

The even better news? You don't have to figure it out alone.

Puppy Start Right is designed to help you survive (and actually enjoy) puppyhood. You'll learn how to tackle the common challenges, build confidence through safe socialization, and set your puppy up for a lifetime of successโ€”all while discovering that everyone else in class is also wondering why their puppy thinks ankles are a food group. ๐Ÿ˜…

If you've got a puppy under 20 weeks old, we'd love to help you turn puppy chaos into puppy confidence.

Join Puppy Start Right and let us make life with your tiny land shark a whole lot easier. ๐Ÿถ

08/07/2026

Choosing the right class for your dog is a bit like buying hiking boots.

Sure... you could squeeze into a toddler-sized pair. Or show up to Everest in flip-flops.

Neither is going to end well. ๐Ÿฅด

One of the biggest reasons dogs struggle in class isn't because they're "stubborn." It's because they're in the wrong class for where they are right now.

A puppy doesn't need advanced distractions.
A shy dog doesn't need to be thrown into the deep end.
And a dog who thinks every squirrel is a life-or-death emergency probably isn't ready for the class where everyone is working three feet apart. ๐Ÿ˜…

The right class meets your dog where they are today, then helps them build the skills and confidence to tackle tomorrow.

That's why we have different classes for different goals, ages, personalities, and skill levels. Whether you've got a tiny land shark, an overenthusiastic teenager, a future Nosework superstar, or a dog who just needs a little help keeping their brain connected to their body, there's a place to start.

Not sure which class is the best fit? That's what we're here for! Send us a message and we'll help point you in the right direction. We'd much rather help you choose the right class now than have your dog audition for "Most Creative Chaos" later. ๐Ÿ˜‰
