If you have ever waited to feel ready before trying something new with your horse, this one is for you.

Riding the barrels smoothly takes a lot of reps, with bend, balance and a clean change of direction at every turn.

The good news is you don't have to be ready for every obstacle to get started. At a working equitation qualifier we watched this year, one rider rode up to an obstacle, put a hand up and said, "I'm passing that one." The judge simply said carry on, and that horse still had a good day.

That is what we love about this sport. Nobody starts at the top, not even with a fancy horse. You start where you are, you do the reps, and if one obstacle feels hard, you practise it at home and try again next time.

We are on the obstacles all day this Sunday, October 18, at Silverfox Equestrian Club in Whitby, from 9:30am to 3:30pm. Are you joining us?

If you love dressage and want a fun new challenge with your horse, meet working equitation.

This is Lazura, one of our beautiful Lusitanos, showing us how it's done. Horse Sport magazine just ran an article on the sport, and we are in it.

Working equitation starts with dressage as the base, then adds obstacles like this bridge, a speed round set to music, and at the top level, even working with cows. Every obstacle asks the same thing of you and your horse: balance, softness and trust.

Getting started doesn't need to be a big production. It is one obstacle, one step towards building confidence and skills, for you and your horse.

This Sunday, October 18, we spend the whole day on the obstacles at Silverfox Equestrian Club in Whitby, from 9:30am to 3:30pm. Come watch for $40 with lunch included. Our members watch for free.

Which obstacle do you think would be the most fun to ride?

Look at those faces.

That's what a Silverfox Equestrian Club Pop Up Camp feels like. A bench full of riders who came for the horses and stayed for each other.

Puff walked right up to say hi to the fans, with Ciara on board, and the whole row lit up.

There's something special about sitting with people who understand. Who know what it's like to love a horse, to share the wins, and to cheer each other on.

Our next Pop Up Camp is Sunday, October 18, from 9:30 to 3:30.

We're playing with Working Equitation obstacles. Ciara and Kristi are hosting, and there's a seat on the bench or on a horse with your name on it.

Email us at [email protected] to join us.

Have you ever wanted to try something new with your horse, just to see what you two can do?

On Sunday, October 18th, Silverfox Equestrian & Wellness Club is hosting a Working Equitation Pop Up Camp at our farm in Whitby.

The day includes two group lessons where riders will learn and train the obstacles. We will also cover how horses and riders train for this sport. Lunch is included, so you can sit, eat and talk horses with good people.

The day is open to Silverfox riders and to outside riders with their own horse. Spectators are welcome too, so if you are curious but not ready to ride, come watch and learn.

Nobody needs to be perfect. That is half the fun.

It is a great way to get to know this sport and feel the connection of a supportive community.

Email [email protected] for all the details.

Have you ever tried Working Equitation, yes or not yet?

Hello. It is Honeycomb. I speak for the herd here, a position I gave myself some time ago and nobody has taken back.

One of our favourite people is moving on, and I will be honest, we are not thrilled about it. She has been very good to us and we will miss her at the gate. We wish her every good thing, and we have said so at length in the field.

Which means we are looking for someone to join the team. Full time, starting in September, here in Ashburn. It is a big pair of boots to fill, so I have been asked to explain what the job actually involves.

Think of it as being paid to go to the gym, except the gym nickers at you when you pull in, and every machine has a personality. Hay bales are your deadlifts. Wheelbarrows and water buckets are your farmer's carries. Turnout is your cardio, and one of us will always add an extra lap for you, free of charge. You will sleep well and you will never once wonder whether you moved enough that day.

The rest of it looks like this. Stalls get mucked. We come in, we go out, and quite often we come straight back in again. Hay goes in front of us. Feed gets made up. Water is kept clean and filled. The barn gets swept and tidied and kept like somewhere people and animals actually want to be.

You will be looking after our people too. Saying hello when they arrive, helping them, answering their questions, sending them home happier than they came in. We are very fond of our people and we would like them looked after properly.

And you will be looking after us, which matters more to me than anything else on this list. Noticing when one of us is a little off. Knowing the difference between grumpy and sore. Making sure everybody is settled and content and nobody is sulking at the back of the field.

So we need somebody who has handled horses before. This is not a beginner job. We are lovely, but we are large and we all have opinions, and I have more than most.

Somebody who sees what needs doing and gets on with it, and who can sort a small problem before it turns into a bigger one. Somebody the rest of the team is glad to see walk through the door.

And there is one more thing, which I was asked to raise personally. You must love giving treats. The vote was unanimous. I counted.

If that sounds like your kind of place, send your resume to [email protected]

Tell us your name, your experience with horses, and the horse who taught you the most. I will be reading over Kristi's shoulder.

The horses at the Olympics went out for grass afterwards.

Best in the world, competing for their country, and what they wanted was grass and a scratch on the neck. Same as our horses at home on a wet Tuesday.

This is Tokyo 2021, the Games that still say 2020 on the shirt. Covid pushed it back a year and no spectators were allowed in. No family, no friends, no support staff. Just riders, horses, and a very quiet stadium.

Kristi Newman was there helping with the dressage, jumping and eventing. Experience of a lifetime. And yes, that is her doing the tourist selfie with the rings.

Here is what nobody warns you about. It was still a horse show.

She had built it into a finish line in her head. Then you get there and think, oh. That's it? Years of work, over in about ten minutes, and then you fly home and there is still washing to do.

So that ride on Wednesday night when nobody is watching. That is not the warm up for your real riding life.

That is your riding life.

What is one ride from this summer you would live again exactly as it was?

Treat day around here is a proper event.

We go through so many treats at Silverfox Equestrian Club. The RITE System runs on them, so a box this size does not last as long as you would think.

So we love it when we can use Canadian made treats that our horses actually want to work for. These scotch mints come from Rewardz Horse Treats, made right here in Ontario. Our horses love them.

We budget for treats before we budget for coffee, which probably tells you everything.

Thank you Rewardz Horse Treats for keeping our pockets full.

What is your horse's favourite treat? Tell us in the comments.

Riders out in the long grass, and not one work email between them.

Monday's adult camp is sold out. Every spot gone.

If you missed it, we have another week starting the 17th and there is still room on that one.

A week in the no adulting zone. No meetings, no laundry, nobody needing anything from you. Just horses, riding, and people who get it.

Grown ups need camp too.

Want a spot the week of the 17th? Comment below or send us a message.

Sunshine, horses, and a group of people who like being around each other.

We talk a lot about the horses here, but our members are the reason Silverfox Equestrian Club feels the way it does. They cheer each other on, they hold a horse when someone needs a hand, and they never make anyone feel silly for asking a question.

Our next adult learn to ride cohort starts Saturday, and we love welcoming new riders to our herd.

Is learning to ride still on your list? Tell us in the comments.

Horses talk. They just do not use words.

A change in how they move, a look, a bit less push from behind. Part of riding is learning to hear it, and then actually doing something about it.

That is where our team comes in, and our vets. When one of ours needs more than we can give at the farm, a trip to King Animal Hospital sorts it.

Feeling their best is not a nice extra. It is the whole job.

What has your horse been telling you lately?
