Pet Hydration Awareness!!

Staying hydrated is essential for your pet's health- especially during hot weather!

Signs of dehydration include:
Dry or sticky gums, sunken eyes, excessive panting, lethargy or weakness, loss of appetite, skin that doesn't quickly spring back to when gently lifted over the shoulders.

Help Keep your Pet Hydrated:
-Provide fresh, clean water at all times.
-Refill water bowls often and keep them in the shade
-Bring water on walks and outdoor adventures
-Feed canned or wet food, if appropriate, to increase water intake
-KEEP PETS INDOORS DURING THE HOTTEST PART OF THE DAY!

If your Pet is showing signs of dehydration or isn't drinking, contact your veterinarian promptly. Prevention is always easier than treatment!

Heat Stroke in Pets: IT CAN BE FATAL!

With temperatures reaching 46 C (and an overall hot summer so far), pets are at serious risk of heat stroke.

Signs of heat Stroke:
Excessive panting, drooling, bright red or pale gums, weakness or collapse, vomiting and/or diarrhea, confusion or seizures.

PREVENTION IS KEY:
-Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when the sun has not risen or is on it;s way down.
-Always provide fresh, cool water
-Keep pets in the shade or indoors with air conditioning or a fan
-NEVER EVER leave a pet in a parked vehicle- even for 1 minute.
-AVOID hot pavement, which can burn paw pads. If it is too hot for the back of your hand, it is too hot or them.

If you suspect heat stroke: Move your pet to a cool area immediately, wet them with cool (NOT ice cold) water, use fans if available, and seek Veterinary care right away.
Heat Stroke IS a medical emergency!

Now that the Summer heat is in full swing, Holly would like to remind everyone of some very important SUMMER SAFETY TIPS to keep her outdoor adventuring safe:
1-Do Not leave your pet inside the car. The temperature increases fast, and it can be life-threatening!
2- Always check the outside temperature, avoid asphalt (it can burn your pet’s paws), play more on the grass, and bring water for your pet. At 25C the asphalt will be 52C. Paws can burn in under 1 min at this temperature.
3- The pool is great, but not all dogs can swim! Never leave a pet unsupervised around pools or any bodies of water.
4- Chilling outside is great in the summer. But just like you, your pet can have skin burns! Avoid the sun’s peak to safely have fun.
5- Keep your brachycephalic breed dogs INSIDE. It is too hot out for dogs with compromised airways.
