Bone Fractures occur as ๐š ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐š๐ง ๐ข๐ง๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฒ/๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ญ ๐จ๐ซ ๐š ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ž ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐œ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ and is usually categorized as ๐€๐œ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ž ๐๐š๐ข๐ง. There are several different types of bone fractures - and the treatment will depend on the location, severity, skin breakage and species. ๐Ÿพ

๐“๐จ๐๐š๐ฒโ€™๐ฌ ๐‚๐š๐ฌ๐ž: ๐Ÿ”Ž

A one year old, male cat disappeared for a few days and returned home limping on his left hind leg. No external injuries or swelling could be seen, however there was some muscle atrophy (muscle loss) noted on his left hind hip/leg area. Despite being in pain, our patient was still bright, alert and responsive.

Through radiographs, we were able to visualize a Fractured Femoral Head. Options included:

1) Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) - A procedure where the femoral head (and neck) is surgically removed.

2) Amputation - Surgical removal of the entire limb

Our patient went home with pain meds and an appointment for an FHO Procedure at a referral clinic. He has since made a wonderful recovery! ๐ŸŽ‰

How does a limb still function after the femoral head is removed? ๐Ÿค”

๐“๐ก๐ž ๐›๐จ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฌ ๐š ๐Ÿ๐ข๐›๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ž in the area that acts as a cushion between the bones. The ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐œ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ then can ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ง, essentially ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐›๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ณ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฃ๐จ๐ข๐ง๐ญ, and eventually regaining function of that joint free of pain! ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›

This year, in Alberta, there has been only 7 cases of Rabies (found in bats). However, there has been a total of ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐œ๐š๐ฌ๐ž๐ฌ across various species (including skunks, raccoons, arctic/red foxes, cats and dogs) ๐š๐œ๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ all of ๐‚๐š๐ง๐š๐๐š! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

One of the more recent cases involved a skunk in Kootenay Lake, BC who was believed to be roaming and infectious between August 15th and September 4th, 2026. While there has been many cases of Rabies being found in animals, there are rare occurances in Humans. This is due to the increased frequency of vaccines, quicker treatments and better awareness! ๐Ÿ“•๐Ÿ’‰

For anyone that has been following along, we talk about ๐๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐จ๐๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ฅ ๐ƒ๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ž and oral care a fair amount. Periodontal Disease is a great example of ๐‚๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ข๐œ ๐๐š๐ข๐ง; a slow build up of tartar accumulation eventually irritating the gum line causing bleeding and leading to organ complications. โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

However, today we want to cover ๐€๐œ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ž ๐Ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐๐š๐ข๐ง. The patient below presented with increased salivation, foul breath and holding her mouth open. Upon the physical exam, followed by sedation, we discovered that our patient had a bone chunk wedged in the left side of her mouth.

Once the bone chunk was removed, she was treated with some oral rinse, antibiotics and pain meds. She made a full recovery! ๐Ÿพ

Skin conditions can be categorized as either Chronic or Acute depending on the situation, and cause. Some times an acute condition can develop into chronic if left untreated or if the treatment is unsuccessful. ๐Ÿ˜•

๐€๐œ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ž ๐ฌ๐ค๐ข๐ง ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ include lacerations/wounds, acute parasitic dermatitis and hot spots. They appear suddenly and often have a quick solution to healing. ๐Ÿฉน

๐‚๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ข๐œ ๐ฌ๐ค๐ข๐ง ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ include allergies, some lick granulomas, chronic parasitic dermatitis, autoimmune disorders and infections. These conditions will often last for long periods of time and are usually complicated to treat. โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

๐’๐ค๐ข๐ง ๐‚๐š๐ฌ๐ž: ๐Ÿ“–

The patient below presented with chronic chewing of his hind leg, and suspected food allergies. The owner changed the patients food and was able to find one that contains no chicken, however the patient kept chewing for about 4-5 weeks.

With a suspected deep skin infection and inflammation of the leg, treatment began with steroids, antibiotics and Laser Therapy treatments (multiple over the next handful of weeks).

During the next few visits, our patient started to have decreased swelling, increased hair growth and a reduced need to lick the area. We are currently still battling this chronic skin condition, but are happy to see so much improvement! ๐Ÿค—

So what are some ๐œ๐š๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ฌ๐ค๐ข๐ง ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ? ๐Ÿค”

- Allergies (Food/Environmental)
- Parasitic Load (Can also lead to Secondary Skin Infection)
- Bacteria (Such as Yeast can develop from a skin fold and/or a moist environment)
- Lesions (Wounds, Abscesses, etc)
- Nervous Behaviours (Anxious Licking/Chewing)
- Grooming (Too Much or Too Little)
- Horomonal Imbalances (Cushings, Hypothyridism, etc)

Diagnosis can start with a ๐ฉ๐ก๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐ž๐ฑ๐š๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, locating what joint seems uncomfortable, if it can move smoothly and if there can be any heat or swelling detected. Following a physical exam, ๐ซ๐š๐๐ข๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐š๐ฉ๐ก๐ฌ are often close behind. This will help determine both location and severity.

Often Arthritis will start off with ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐›๐ญ๐ฅ๐ž ๐œ๐ก๐š๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ฌ, and can eventually lead to โ€œ๐›๐จ๐ง๐ž๐ฒ ๐œ๐ก๐š๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ฌโ€ as seen in the image below. Bones and joints should appear smooth, and should have even spacing within the joints.

๐€๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ž๐ž๐ง ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ ๐ž ๐›๐ž๐ฅ๐จ๐ฐ (12yr, Female/Spayed Garage/Outdoor Cat), the joints are very rough and the spaces between the joint spaces are relatively unclear. This ๐›๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ค๐ข๐ง๐  ๐๐จ๐ฐ๐ง ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐›๐จ๐ง๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐œ๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ๐š๐ ๐ž ๐œ๐š๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐š๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฃ๐จ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ point of movement, and inflicts pain and discomfort. โšก๏ธ

๐‡๐จ๐ฐ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ข๐ญ ๐“๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ž๐? ๐Ÿฉบ

Depending on Severity and Quality of Life, there are different levels of treatment. ๐€๐ซ๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ ๐œ๐š๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐›๐ž ๐œ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž๐, however the pain/discomfort can often be managed. ๐Ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐’๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ are a great place to start, often supporting the synovial fluid (joint fluid), making it easier for the bone connection to glide past each other. ๐Ÿฆด

๐๐š๐ข๐ง ๐ฆ๐ž๐๐ข๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ are often the next step, being offered to help ease the rough/sore days. Medications such as NSAIDs can sometimes be hard on the Kidneys, so they should be used exactly as prescribed and not used a daily solution (unless directed differently from your veterinarian). ๐Ÿ’Š

A more recent addition to the battle against arthritis is ๐ฆ๐จ๐ง๐จ๐œ๐ฅ๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐›๐จ๐๐ข๐ž๐ฌ, such as Librela and Solensia. These are monthly injections that block pain sensors, allowing cats and dogs to be more comfortable on a daily basis. Caution must be used when pets are on these medications as they can easily forget that they have damaged joints and can easily over due their activity, and cause further damage. ๐Ÿ’‰

Can you tell if your pet is in pain? ๐Ÿค” What changes will you notice?

It is engrained in ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐š๐ง๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ฅ๐ฌ to ๐ก๐ข๐๐ž ๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ฉ๐š๐ข๐ง. This is a survival method used in the wild to avoid predators from singling them out. Today, domesticated pets with often still try to hide signs of discomfort which make it difficult to determine a diagnosis of pain. However! There are a few subtle changes that can be noticed:
