Last night was, without a doubt, the worst and largest rabbit dump I have ever been involved in. 💔🐰
Yesterday evening, I received an email about some rabbits that had been dumped. As someone who volunteers to help catch lost and dumped animals, I went out to help.
I had absolutely no idea what I was walking into.
In just 3 hours, we caught 31 rabbits.
Thirty-one.
What I thought was going to be a quick rescue turned into hours of chasing, catching, carrying, organizing and trying to figure out what the heck we were going to do with 31 rabbits.
It was exhausting. It was chaotic. It was heartbreaking. And honestly, it was overwhelming.
But we couldn’t leave them there.
I am incredibly grateful for everyone who jumped in to help. People opened their homes, brought cages and supplies, helped with the actual catching, donated food and hay, and helped us find safe places for these rabbits to go.
And somehow, every single rabbit caught last night ended up somewhere safe. 💚
Most are only in temporary foster homes, but right now, that’s okay. They are safe. We have time to figure out the next steps.
There is still a LONG road ahead. These rabbits need veterinary care, spaying/neutering and eventually loving forever homes.
But after last night’s chaos, I’m just incredibly relieved knowing that 31 rabbits are no longer outside trying to survive on their own.
I’ve been involved in rescues before, but this was by far the worst and largest dump I’ve ever been a part of.
31 rabbits.
3 hours.
Two absolutely exhausting nights.
But they’re safe. And that’s what matters.
I am so grateful for the rescue communities I am apart of.
Thank you to Ground Search And Rescue KW for everything you have helped accomplish.
