Murphy was asked to make a scarecrow and apparently heard “construct a full-scale public art installation and permanently ruin this competition for us.”

This absolute UNIT is our entry for Waterdown’s annual Scarecrow Walk and I genuinely have questions. Is this even a scarecrow anymore? Is Murphy now our resident set designer? Do we have to top this next year?? Because the bar is currently somewhere in orbit.

Please direct all praise to Murphy, and all future expectations elsewhere. 🫡🐶🎃

We are of course accepting votes, tags, and pleas to Waterdown Village to be in next year’s pamphlet.

10/10. No notes. Mildly furious about the precedent they’ve set.

Christmas is 13 weeks away. 🎄✂️

Which sounds like plenty of time until you remember that, for a lot of dogs, that’s really only two grooms between now and Christmas.

So if you want the timing to land just right, this is your sign to book one now and your pre-Christmas groom at the same time.

Because December appointments are already filling faster than a stocking full of coal, and Future You does not need to be sending a panic text on December 18th asking if we can “squeeze them in.” 😂

Book both. Protect your spot. Enjoy your smug little moment of preparednes.

Sorry not sorry 🎄🫣

✨Meet-and-Greet Mondays are here ✨

Underdog & Co. has full books and only a handful of spaces for new dogs. That means we get to be intentional about who we add, because fit matters more than simply filling an appointment.

Moving forward, some prospective clients will be invited to a short Meet-and-Greet Monday appointment before booking a full groom. We’ll meet your dog, talk through their grooming history, see how they feel about handling, and decide whether our shop is the right fit for both of us.

We’ve worked hard to build a calm, one-on-one salon where dogs can settle, staff can work safely, and grooming doesn’t feel like a contact sport. We want to protect that.

✨ You may be a great fit for us if:

• You value comfort and humanity over vanity.
• You’re honest about behaviour and grooming history.
• You maintain your dog between appointments, or choose a style you can maintain.
• You follow recommendations about scheduling, coat care, training or veterinary support.
• Your dog may be nervous, quirky or opinionated, but can recover, participate and make progress.
• You want a collaborative relationship with your groomer.

🚫 We probably aren’t the place for you if:
• You expect us to repeatedly wrestle a dog through grooming with no work happening between appointments.
• Severe matting is a recurring pattern and you’re unwilling to change the haircut, schedule or home care.
• Your dog regularly bites, thrashes, yanks or requires significant restraint for basic grooming and there is no plan to improve that through cooperative care, training or veterinary support.
• The finished haircut matters more than your dog’s comfort.
• You want someone to simply “get it done” at any cost.

None of this makes a dog bad. Some dogs need a different environment, more training, veterinary support, medication etc.

We are not trying to be everyone’s groomer.

We’re protecting the peace of the dogs who trust us, the bodies of the people doing this work, and the standard of care that made Underdog what it is.

We’re not the right fit for everyone. That’s why we’re such a good fit for the people and dogs who are. ❤️

Well… that’s a wrap on Pride Month. 🌈

First things first, I’d call that a successful June.

We only had one person shove our Pride bandana into a planter instead of just… telling us they didn’t want it like a well-adjusted adult, and I only got blocked by three people. Frankly, those are rookie numbers.

In all seriousness though, thank you.

Thank you to everyone who read along, asked thoughtful questions, challenged their own assumptions, or simply took a moment to listen. Those conversations matter more than people realize.

And to every q***r person who quietly followed along, especially those who aren’t in a place where they can be loud yet, I hope these posts reminded you that there are people in your corner. You don’t have to earn your right to exist. You never did.

Pride has never been about convincing everyone to agree with us. It’s about making sure people can live authentic, ordinary lives without fear. It’s about being able to bring your spouse to a barbecue, hold your partner’s hand at the grocery store, raise your kids, start your business, walk your dog, and exist without your humanity being up for debate.

Tomorrow the rainbow logos come down. The corporations move on to whatever month is next.

We’ll still be here.

Still grooming dogs. Still raising our families. Still paying our taxes. Still making bad dad jokes. Still existing. Funny how that works.

To everyone who supported us this month, thank you. To those who disagreed respectfully, thank you for showing that conversations are still possible. And to the people who hit “block”… I genuinely hope you have a nice summer. I also hope you eventually discover how liberating it is to simply let other people exist.

Happy Pride, everyone. See you next June.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming: dogs🌈🐾

And my personal favourite:

✨ Simply knowing that q***r people exist ✨

Every Pride Month, we’re told that children are somehow being influenced, recruited, or groomed into being LGBTQ+. But here’s the thing:

Every q***r adult reading this was raised in a world that overwhelmingly assumed they were straight. Most of us grew up watching straight romances, straight marriages, straight families, straight fairy tales, and straight representation everywhere we looked.

And yet. Here we are. Because that’s not how any of this works. Knowing q***r people exist doesn’t make kids gay. Knowing trans people exist doesn’t make kids trans. What it does do is teach kids that different kinds of people exist in the world. That’s it.

It tells people they don’t have to hide. It tells a kid who’s feeling different that they’re not broken.
It tells them there are people like them living happy, ordinary, beautiful lives.

It tells them that if someone else was brave enough to be themselves, maybe they can be too.

We’ve seen this before. For generations, left-handed children were punished, corrected, and forced to use their right hand. As those practices disappeared, the number of people openly identifying as left-handed rose dramatically. Not because schools were turning kids left-handed. Not because left-handedness was contagious.

The left-handed people were already there.
They were finally allowed to be visible. The same principle applies here.

There aren’t suddenly more q***r and trans kids because they saw a Pride flag, or a trans person existing in public. There is simply more room for them to be honest about who they already are. And I would argue that’s a good thing. Because the alternative is teaching people that hiding is safer than being themselves.

A child seeing q***r representation is not a crisis or grooming.

The only thing that’s actually happening is that children are learning that human beings come in more than one variety.

Which is true.

Happy Pride, friends. 🌈

Alright. The time has come.

After years of speculation, outrage, and Facebook comment sections, I’m finally ready to reveal…

✨ The Gay Agenda ✨

Today’s objectives include:

☕ Acquiring an iced coffee.

☕ Forgetting where I put the iced coffee.

☕ Finding the iced coffee.

☕ Walking into a room and immediately forgetting why I went in there.

🐕 Convincing a doodle that the blow dryer is not, in fact, a government conspiracy.

👶 Convincing my toddler that rocks are not food.

👶 Convincing my toddler that dog kibble is also not food.

👶 Losing that argument.

📱 Answering one text message and somehow creating six more tasks for myself.

💸 Paying taxes.

🧺 Wondering if the dishes in the dishwasher are clean or dirty.

🏳️‍🌈 Existing in public.

That’s the one people seem most upset about.

Every Pride Month we’re told there’s a secret agenda. A plan. A movement. A plot.

Friend, I can barely remember why I walked into the kitchen.

The overwhelming majority of q***r people are just trying to do the same things everyone else is doing:

Love our people.

Raise our families.

Pay our bills.

Walk our dogs.

Drink our iced coffee.

And occasionally convince a tiny human not to eat landscaping materials.

The “agenda” was never world domination.

It was being allowed to exist openly enough that nobody needed an agenda in the first place.

Happy Pride, friends. May your coffee stay cold, your toddler stay out of the gravel, and your existence never require an explanation. 🌈

⚠️ Trigger warning: homophobia, transphobia, violence, and examples of anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric.

If you’re q***r, if you’ve lived through this firsthand and aren’t in a place to read about it today, please keep scrolling and take care of yourself. And remember: not reading the comment section is self-care.

Every year, someone asks:

“Why do we still need Pride?”

It’s a fair question if you haven’t had to think about it.

Pride began as a protest. Q***r people, exhausted by discrimination, harassment, and police violence, finally said “enough.” Special recognition is owed to Black q***r and trans people who were at the forefront of that fight and helped push the movement forward.

And yes, progress has happened.

That’s worth celebrating.

But if you’re wondering why Pride still exists, it’s because our fight isn’t over.

Not even close.

Rights and protections are actively being challenged and rolled back. Equality is still debated in elections. Being LGBTQ+ is still criminalized in dozens of countries around the world.

And if you’d like a less global example, you don’t have to look any farther than the comment section of almost any Pride-related Facebook post.

Comments like:

“Happy mental illness month.”

“Happy p€doph1le appreciation month.”

Those aren’t rare.

They’re common.

If you’re a straight person reading this and that surprises you, I encourage you to spend ten minutes reading the comments on a few Pride posts this month. But steel yourself.
