The Beacon Hill Childrenโ€™s Farm, located within beautiful Beacon Hill Park of Victoria, B.C., is pleased to bring the farm animal experience into the city. Operated since 1985 by the Koenders family in conjunction with the Beacon Hill Farm Society, the Beacon Hill Childrenโ€™s Farm takes pride in providing both an educational and economical form of entertainment for the whole family. The hands-on experience, particularly with the most popular feature that is the goat petting area, encourages children be compassionate toward living creatures.

Our guinea pigs are staying warm and cozy while enjoying snack time.
These little ladies with their fine noses will find all the little grass treats spread around and nibble them all up.
Arenโ€™t they just the cutest?! โค๏ธ

Did you know?

Pigs have about 15,000 taste buds. We have closer to 10,000, so mealtime is a pretty big deal for them.

Our pigs at Beacon Hill Children's Farm get fresh fruits and veggies every day on top of their daily pig pellets. Zucchini, eggplant, celery, bok choy and bell peppers make up most of what they eat. Carrots and apples are on the menu too, in smaller amounts. We pick produce that's tasty but low in sugar. We aren't trying to fatten our pigs up. We want them to stay at a healthy weight.

We also boil some eggs from our own chickens and ducks for them. The eggs add extra protein and healthy fats to their diet, and the pigs seem to think they're a special treat. Every now and again they even get some Cheerios as a special treat, and in the fall they enjoy pumpkins.

Let us know if you would be interested in seeing the pigs enjoy a Halloween pumpkin!

Meet Po!
She is such a sweet, friendly goat who loves pets and a good hoof rub. With an adorable little black spot on her nose sheโ€™s the Marilyn Monroe of our goat herd.

When Po was born in 2024, her mom Snowdrift had triplets, which is a lot of babies to care for! To give Snowdrift a hand, our staff stepped in with supplemental bottle feedings. Po loved her bottle time, which is how she developed a strong bond with people. In fact, if you call her name, sheโ€™ll often answer and then have a little "conversation" with you.

Today, Po is thriving and spends her days hanging out with her mom, her half-sister Summer, her cousins Sahara and Mojave, and her bestie, Dragon.

We get asked about her name a lot! Sheโ€™s named after Po from Kung Fu Panda, who is the character in the movie who becomes the Dragon Master. It turned out to be the perfect name, considering her best friend on the farm is a goat named Dragon!

While the farm is closed now for the winter, the animals are enjoying this great autumn weather and gorgeous sunshine while curiously watching the staff getting everything ready for the colder months.

When walking through the park youโ€˜ll be able to spot many of the animals through the fence as they observe what happening around them!

Alpacas talk to each other mostly by humming.
It's their most common sound, and the meaning changes with the moment. A hum can be a calm check in with the herd, or a sign that they are happy, curious or that something is bothering them.
Quick note so everybody's clear: the humming in this video is a human voice humming a tune.
We've tried quite hard to capture the real thing, but so far no luck. Alpaca hums are soft and low and made with the mouth closed, so they get lost easily under the wind and the sounds of the noisier animals around them. If we happen to capture the elusive humming of our alpacas, we will be sure to post it.
Alpacas have other ways of communicating too. When one senses danger, it gives a loud alarm call that tells the rest of the herd to pay attention. Mothers make a quiet clucking sound to their babies. A frightened alpaca may scream. Much of their conversation is silent, though, so watching their ears and posture tells you a lot about how they're feeling. Like horses and dogs, alpacas lay their ears flat against their heads when they're upset. In a heated argument, they may even spit at each other.

Whether itโ€™s a quiet hum, a subtle ear tilt, or the occasional dramatic spit, alpacas are very social animals who almost always have something to say!

Meet Rose the Turkey

After a busy Thanksgiving long weekend (a stressful time for turkeys, and maybe for a few of us who spent it navigating family dynamics), some of us are ready for a nice relaxing bath and a nap. You might reach for bubbles but Rose prefers dust.

The nice thing about a dust bath is there's no risk in dozing off, and Rose loves a dust and doze combo. While she enjoys this, her partner Dwayne stands guard in the background, showing off his beautiful feathers and shooing away any chickens who disturb her.

Rose and Dwayne came to us just before Thanksgiving last year, and they've been a great addition to our flock. Turkeys actually help protect the smaller birds, since hawks and other predators are far less likely to attack when these big, sometimes territorial birds are around. They have the odd disagreement with our young rooster Foghorn, but mostly everyone gets along. Rose also lays beautiful speckled eggs that are quite large.

The farm is closed for the season, but you can still see Rose and Dwayne roaming the chicken yard with the rest of the flock.
