Goat kids are naturally curious, and like all young mammals, they learn through play.

These twins, Hip-Hop and Bebop, are very curious about this peacock’s long, interesting tail, but it is likely they are going to end up with a peck on the nose.

Although Hip-Hop and Bebop do not know any better yet, we humans do. So if you are in Beacon Hill Park, remember to observe the peafowl and all other wildlife from a safe distance, to help us all coexist in a safe and respectful way.

Happy World Parrot Day! 🦜🍍

Meet Mango, our Pineapple Green Cheek Conure who has the colouring of a nice ripe mango. 🥭
Mango is playful, clever, and just a little bit cheeky.

We always find ourselves referring to Mango as a he, but the truth is we have no idea! Male and female Green Cheek Conures look completely identical, and the only way to know for sure is a DNA test.

Here’s a little something you might not know about doves.

While most birds have to scoop up a beakful of water and tip their heads back to swallow, our doves skip the whole routine. Their pigeon cousins do the very same thing.

They simply dip in and drink straight through, using their beak and tongue like a built in straw. No head tipping, no fuss, just a nice steady sip. It’s one of those small things that makes them quietly impressive once you know to look for it.

Next time you stop by, keep an eye on the water dish. You might just catch them showing off.

Meet Foghorn 🐓
This handsome fellow came to the farm as a youngster, and at first we thought he was a hen, since it’s often hard to tell with young chickens. The big reveal came when he started trying to crow.
Now, young roosters don’t just wake up one day with a polished cock-a-doodle-doo. They have to practice, and the early attempts can sound a lot more like a creaky gate or a strained wheeze than that proud farmyard call. Foghorn’s first tries were so deep, loud, and horn-like that his name pretty much wrote itself. It took him several months of practice before that crow finally came together, and by then the name had stuck for good.
These days he’s a confident rooster with a proper crow to match.

Fun Fact!

Ever wondered what our goats are always chewing on? 🐐

You’ll catch them at it pretty much constantly, jaws working away even when there isn’t a snack in sight. So what’s actually going on in there?

Goats are ruminants, which means their stomach has four separate chambers, each with its own job to do. When a goat takes a bite of hay, they give it a quick chew, swallow it down, and let it soften up in the first chamber. A little while later, they send that softened bite back up for a proper, leisurely chew. That’s called chewing the cud, and it’s how a goat squeezes every last bit of goodness out of every mouthful.

So the next time you spot one of our goats chewing away with that thoughtful look in their eye, they aren’t daydreaming. They’re just enjoying lunch.
