This elegant breed can trace its roots all the way back to the Babylonian Empire! That said, the breed’s history in North America dates back to World War II when a breeding pair was imported from Turkey to participate in the (top secret!) “Sheep Dog Project”. The credit for firmly establishing the breed in the US goes to Lieutenant Robert Ballard of the US Navy, who successfully bred his first litter in 1970.

These intelligent and rugged guardian dogs are patient and extremely loyal. They have functioned as livestock guardians for decades and continue to do so today - usually preferring to intimidate potential threats rather than physically harm them. Because they will protect their flock - including not only livestock but children, small animals, other dogs and even cats! - choosing this breed means you must be a strong leader who is able to handle the Anatolian’s calm and yet dominate, demanding nature.
