"Don't worry, he's friendly!"

To a reactive dog owner,
those are the scariest words at the park.

Because our dog might not be.

They might be in training.
They might be recovering from an injury.
They might be old, scared or sore.

Or they might be working hard
to stay calm around dogs.
And your dog just undid weeks of owner confidence.

This isn't about blame.
Most people just don't know.

So here's dog etiquette 101:

1. Always ask before greeting.
A "can they say hi?" goes a long way.

2. Leash means leash.
On-leash areas are for everyone's safety.

3. If you can't recall it, leash it.
A friendly dog running up is still an uninvited dog.

4. Give space when asked.
A yellow leash or a crossing owner is a signal.

5. Respect "no."
It isn't rude. It's responsible.

Every dog deserves a safe walk.
Including the ones who need more space.

📅 Holiday Closure Notice🍂

Focus Canine will be closed **Friday, October 9 to Monday, October 12** for the Thanksgiving long weekend. During this time we won't be responding to emails, texts, or calls. We're taking a few days to rest, recharge, and enjoy time with family (and our own pups!) 🐾

We'll be back on Tuesday, October 13, then closed again on **Wednesday, October 14** to celebrate our head trainer, Sydney's birthday 🎉 Normal operations resume Thursday, October 15.

Twelve dogs.
One walk.
Zero chaos.

This is what a structured group walk looks like.

No greetings.
No pulling.
No dog fights.

Just dogs learning to exist calmly
next to other dogs.

Meet Nala 🐾

Nala is a Siberian Husky in our Total Control Program, working toward reliable off-leash skills and neutrality around distractions—especially other dogs.

Huskies often get labelled as dogs that “can't be off leash.” The reality is that breed traits matter, but they don't automatically mean off-leash reliability is impossible.

With the right training, appropriate equipment, and a professional introduction to remote collar work, Huskies can learn to make good choices and stay connected to their handlers—even when distractions are present.

Nala is working toward more freedom, one skill at a time.

Meet Duke 🐾

Duke is one of our helper dogs and has completed a variety of training services with us over the years.

When he's not helping out at our social classes, Duke loves coming along to our sport classes—especially nose work. It's a great way to give him something fun and engaging to work on while putting his natural skills to use.

He's a Staffy with plenty of personality, a great training foundation, and an important role in helping other dogs succeed.

Meet Victor 🐾

Victor may be missing most of his teeth, but he certainly hasn't lost his sweetness.

He's one of those rescue dogs who reminds us that every dog deserves the chance to live a full, happy life. With a dedicated owner who has given him the best of it, Victor gets to enjoy plenty of freedom, including running off leash and confidently socializing with other dogs.

Victor has completed a variety of training services with us over the years and is now fully off-leash trained and socialized.

Sophie and her Golden Retriever completed our Total Control Program, focusing on advanced obedience and behaviour to build reliability in real-world situations.

We love getting updates like this. 🐾

This young, intact Aussiedoodle joined our Total Control Program to develop reliable off-leash control while still being able to enjoy the freedom that comes with it.

He’s a very friendly, balanced dog who has done exceptionally well for his age. He’s also naturally a pretty quiet, reserved guy, so it’s been especially rewarding to see his confidence and personality come through as his remote collar training progresses.

There’s a common belief that remote collars suppress dogs, make them fearful, or diminish their personality. But when a remote collar is introduced properly and used with clear communication, the opposite can happen.

The goal isn’t to scare a dog into obedience. It’s to teach them how the information from the collar relates to the behaviours we’re asking for, so they can understand what is expected of them.

When the communication becomes clear, we often see dogs become more confident in their ability to navigate distractions and make the right choices.

For this guy, that clarity is helping him show more of his potential—not less of his personality.
