Please consider a paper collar. We get calls all the time about a stray that needs help. And so often it’s not a stray at all. (Ps we aren’t animal control, just a small animal rescue. We can’t help with owned animals. That’s the crd or Victoria animal control

I was doing a little work tonight and happened to look at the numbers for our **Low-Income Spay & Neuter Program**… and I had to stop for a second.

Since this program began, **IBKC has issued almost 300 spay and neuter vouchers.** ❤️

That’s almost 300 pets whose families needed a little help making spay or neuter possible. It’s hundreds of families supported, hundreds of animals receiving care, and countless unwanted litters prevented.

Sometimes when you’re busy doing the work every day, you don’t realize how much it adds up.

**Almost 300 vouchers. That’s pretty incredible.**

The average litter is roughly 5-6 and considering half of these vouchers are for females, this amounts to 900 unnecessary kittens and puppies being born with no home to live in. And if you factor in the fertility of the babies and compounding it grows to almost 10,000 in a year.

And we couldn’t do it without you. Every donation, raffle ticket, share, and bit of support helps us continue programs like this and keep veterinary care accessible to families in our community.

In particular I wanted to make special mention of Sandra Cleland and Ethan Wong for their help. It definately takes a village, but also it helps when you have a wise aunty and uncle to help.

Does Victoria really have a feral cat population?

The answer is a very big YES.

We trap feral adults and kittens in Greater Victoria all the time. This little family is just one example.

These kittens were born on May 20th, so they are only about 13 weeks old. We know their exact age because we first tried to trap this family when the kittens were just 4 days old. Unfortunately, Mama was spooked and moved her babies before we could get them to safety.

At that time, there were five kittens.

Today, there are only three. 💔

That's the reality of kittens being born outside. Not all of them survive.

We will be spaying Mama and fixing all three kittens, as well as vaccinating them and treating them for fleas and worms. At 13 weeks, however, their prime socialization window has passed. We absolutely do work with older feral kittens when we have the resources and believe they can adjust to indoor life—but socialization takes time, space, and money.

Right now, we are out of space and funds.

So the kindest thing we can do for this family is make sure there are no more kittens born into this cycle. They will all be sterilized and receive basic preventative veterinary care.

And then we'll move on to the next colony. And the next family. Because they keep coming.

We want to continue fixing as many feral cats in Greater Victoria as we possibly can—but we need your help to do it.

🐾 PLEASE SHARE FAR & WIDE — OUR SHY KITTENS NEED HOMES! 🐾

We have a huge backlog of beautiful, adoptable kittens right now who keep getting overlooked for one simple reason: they’re shy.

These are the kittens who probably won’t show well when you meet them. They may hide. They may freeze. They may not come running for cuddles or show you their personality right away.

But please don’t mistake scared for unfriendly. ❤️

These kittens have so much potential. What they need is something we simply can’t give them in a busy rescue environment — a quiet home, patience, consistency, and someone to bond with.

We have seen it over and over again: a frightened little kitten gets into a home, realizes they’re safe, and slowly starts to blossom. The kitten who hid becomes the cat who sleeps beside you. The kitten who wouldn’t let you touch them starts asking for pets. The kitten nobody chose becomes someone’s absolute best friend. 🥹

They don't need a perfect adopter. They need a patient one.

If you have a quieter home and are willing to give a shy kitten the time they need to settle in, please consider adopting one of our shy babies. And even if you can’t adopt, PLEASE SHARE this post far and wide. The right homes for these kittens are out there — we just need to reach them. ❤️🐾
