When managing my own pastures, even with their relative small size, the improvements year over year were significant once I simply focused on the height of the forage and systematically removing w**d seeds by mostly chopping and collecting.
More recently I’ve noticed a misunderstanding around “roughs” and “graze”. The roughs in these cases are all attributable to manure fouling the graze by being left in situ. Weeds allowed to seed further limit the forage. So year over year pastures managed in this fashion become less and less available as forage. Now the land is made poorer - compacted/less arable/ species depleted/w**d dominant, the humans have more cost and labour to provide preserved forage, and horse health and welfare is compromised by parasites and the overuse of dewormers, toxins in w**ds, and competition for suitable graze and the follow-on costs of veterinary intervention.
This is another example of the “one- health” interdependence of humans, animals, and the environment.
