We get asked from time to time whether our animals are available for adoption, whether we offer fostering, or whether we would consider rehoming one of our residents. The answer is no, and there is so much more behind that answer than people might not realize.

Many of the animals who arrive here have already experienced more homes, families, and goodbyes than they ever should have. They have been passed from one person to another, sometimes through no fault of their own, never knowing where they truly belong or how long they will be allowed to stay.

When they arrive here, they begin to build friendships, form deep bonds, and discover a sense of safety. They learn the rhythms of their days and find their place within the herd. They begin to trust that this land, these companions, and this home are theirs.

We believe that once an animal has finally found that sense of belonging, they shouldn't have to lose it.

Our residents also come with needs that don't simply disappear once they are rescued. Many require lifelong medication, specialized diets, regular veterinary care, or ongoing support for chronic illnesses, disabilities, and the lasting effects of neglect. As they age, their needs may become more complex, but our responsibility to them remains the same.

And then there are the animals who may never fully trust humans, who don't want to be touched, or who need the freedom to decide when and how they interact with us. They don't need to change to deserve a home. They are allowed to have boundaries, to heal in their own time, and to live without expectations placed upon them.

Their relationships with one another matter, too. The friendships they build, the companions they choose, and the bonds they form are part of their well-being. They are not simply animals sharing a piece of land. They are a community.

When we welcome a resident, we are committing to their entire life. Their healthy days and their difficult ones. Their independence and their vulnerability. Their golden years and, when the time comes, their final goodbye.

Here, they are home. They are family. They are forever ❤️

I'm not a therapist, but have you tried rescuing animals?

Have you ever sat beside a horse who has every reason in the world not to trust humans, and watched them slowly learn that not every human will hurt them?

Have you ever cared for an animal who has been neglected, abandoned, or discarded, and realised that somewhere along the way, while you were helping them heal, something inside you was healing too?

Have you ever spent time with an animal who doesn't care about your job title, your bank account, your appearance, your past, or how well you're holding it all together? They don't need you to pretend. They don't need you to be strong. They just need you to be there.

Rescuing animals isn't always pretty. It's exhausting, heartbreaking, messy, and sometimes you love them knowing you won't get nearly as much time with them as you wish you could. But it's also one of the most beautiful things I've ever experienced.

Because somewhere between the early mornings, the muck, the medications, the heartbreak, the laughter, and the quiet moments when a once-terrified animal finally feels safe enough to rest, you begin to understand something.

Healing doesn't always happen in a therapy room. Sometimes it happens in a pasture. Sometimes it happens with your forehead resting against a horse's neck, tears falling freely because, for the first time that day, you don't have to explain how you feel.

And sometimes, the animals we rescue end up giving us far more than we could ever give them.

I'm not saying rescuing animals replaces therapy, and I'm certainly not saying it's easy. But I am saying that there is something incredibly powerful about loving a being who asks for nothing more than safety, kindness, and the freedom to simply exist.

Here, at the sanctuary, we witness it every single day. Animals finding safety, humans finding connection, and hearts remembering what it feels like to be present, to be needed, and to love without conditions.

Maybe we don't always rescue animals because we're broken. Sometimes we rescue them because we recognise something in them that the world has forgotten how to see.

And somewhere along the way, we find it in ourselves too ❤

Here is what happens when I try to do chores.............

April lost her entire family to a bear attack. She was the only one who survived, and I think that’s why we have a little extra soft spot for her.

Every evening at dinner time, we let her and a few of our seniors come over to the other side of the sanctuary so they can enjoy their meal in peace. It’s one of the little ways we spoil them.

Tonight, the horses were taking their sweet time eating, and April was NOT impressed! She was giving me heck, letting me know she had waited long enough and dinner needed to be served!

I only wish my phone could capture her sweet little voice better because even when she’s impatient, she is the sweetest soul with the most precious voice.

Life has not always been kind to our girl, but she is safe, she is loved, and she will always be spoiled just a little extra here. Because sometimes, love looks like making sure the ones who have already lost so much never have to worry about their next meal.

Omg WHAT A DAY!

Our sweet Asteria has been limping badly, and we’ve had her on stall rest while trying to figure out how to help her. She is one of our wild horses, and she is absolutely terrified of just about everything, including humans. We don’t know what her past looked like, but she has been with us for two years, in safety, love and care, and she still isn’t ready to let us touch her.

Yesterday, our incredible vet, Dr. Burleigh, assessed her and together we made a plan to sedate her today so we could finally get to the bottom of what was happening.

And today, with one amazing vet, one wonderful farrier, her husband, Ron and me, we got it done! ❤️

Asteria had one of the worst abscesses I have ever seen. Imagine constantly standing and walking on a painfully ingrown nail. No wonder our poor girl was struggling so badly.

While she was sedated, our vet took the opportunity to do a full health assessment, bloodwork and check her teeth. We found out that our sweet girl is only 10 years old!

She is already doing much better, and she is finally on her way to healing.

But this post is about gratitude. Dr. Burleigh, you are truly something special. You have sacrificed days off, weekends and holidays to care for our animals, and we will never take that dedication for granted. You show up when our animals need you, even when it means giving up your own time, and that kind of compassion is priceless.

A huge thank you to Dr. Burleigh, Kristi and her husband for being there for Asteria today.

Ron and I are exhausted with a CAPITAL E! Between getting Asteria treated, trimming six more horses and doing all our usual chores, we are officially running on empty. But tonight, our hearts are so much lighter knowing that we were able to give this frightened girl some much-needed relief.

She may not understand that we are trying to help her, and she may never be the kind of horse who lets us wrap our arms around her. That’s okay. She doesn’t owe us her trust or her affection. She deserves to be safe, to be comfortable and to have people who will keep showing up for her, no matter what.

And today, we did just that ❤️🐴

So far, Mr Storm has ruined 4 chair covers, one massage bed, a pillow case, several blankets, a tablecloth, a painting, a table (he literally knocked it down) and several trinkets. Is he worth it all??? 1000% ❤️

Happy Friday friends ❤️

Our little two-legged wonder has officially joined the hive, and honestly, we’re not sure anything could be cuter than this 🐝

Marti may do things a little differently, but she has a way of reminding us that being different is something to celebrate, and that a little bit of magic can be found in the most unexpected places.

Now, can we all agree that Marti wins Halloween? 🐝🥹💛

$420 💛💛💛

Not just $420 raised for our animals, but $420 created by people coming together and choosing to give back.

Thank you to Jess, Celena and the entire JESS NOBREGA | SOULFUL YOGI crew for choosing our sanctuary for your Sunset Yoga fundraiser at The Perch Winery

This is what community looks like. People gathering together and using their time, energy and hearts to make life a little better for animals they may have never even met.

From all of us at Forever Home Sanctuary thank you for showing up ✨️💛✨️

Over the last couple of weeks, we have received an incredible number of requests for animals needing a place at the sanctuary, most of them horses. As much as it breaks our hearts to say it, we have reached our capacity. It’s not so much about the financial side. It’s about time.

Caring for around 60 residents takes an enormous amount of work every single day. There is cleaning, feeding, hay, medications, checking on everyone, and all of the little things that come with caring for a large family of animals. And on top of that, hosting tours and events, fundraisers, replying to emails, writing receipts and tending to emergencies as they come.

We are incredibly grateful for the volunteers who already help us. We have a wonderful team who come Tuesday and Thursday evenings to help with cleaning, and we truly could not do it without them. But the reality is that cleaning happens twice a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. So even with the amazing help we receive, there are still 12 other cleaning shifts every week that need to be covered.

Ron and I are the main caretakers, doing it all, while also working full-time, 5 days a week, in very demanding jobs. We are 100% volunteer-run. There is no staff coming in behind us to take over when we leave the sanctuary. The animals still need to be fed, medicated, checked on and cared for every single day.

So if you are thinking about volunteering with us, we want to be really transparent about what that looks like.

Sanctuary work is hard, physical work. There is cleaning, lifting, hauling, feeding and getting dirty. And right now, we need people who are willing to make a regular commitment and become part of the team. Even one consistent day a week can make a huge difference.

We wish we could say yes to every animal who needs us. We really do. But bringing another animal through our gates when we don't have the capacity to give them the time and care they deserve wouldn't be fair to them or to the 60-ish residents who already call Forever Home home.
