Seasonal De-Shedding: It’s About Beauty, But Most Importantly, It’s About Health
During shedding season, especially in double-coated dogs, a significant amount of dead undercoat can become trapped within the coat.
A proper bath, thorough drying, and a deep de-shedding session help remove a large amount of this dead hair and keep the coat healthy and functional.
But coat maintenance isn’t just about having a clean, beautiful-looking dog.
A neglected coat can become a real welfare issue.
🩺 Pain and discomfort
When dead hair builds up and forms tangles or mats, it can pull on the skin and make certain areas sensitive or painful. Severe matting can also trap moisture against the skin and cause irritation.
🦠 Skin irritation and skin problems
Moisture and debris trapped beneath a dense or matted coat can create an environment that promotes bacterial growth and contributes to skin infections and other skin problems. This is especially important in hot and humid climates.
🔎 Spotting health issues sooner
Regular brushing also allows you to inspect the skin and notice redness, wounds, painful areas, parasites, lumps, or other abnormalities that could otherwise go unnoticed beneath a very dense coat.
❤️ Comfort comes first
A dog shouldn’t have to wait until their coat is completely compacted before receiving proper grooming. Regular maintenance helps remove dead hair before it builds up, reduces the formation of tangles and mats, and helps keep the skin and coat in better condition.
🌡️ And remember: de-shedding does NOT mean shaving.
In double-coated dogs, the undercoat and outer coat help protect the skin and play a role in temperature regulation. The goal of de-shedding is to remove dead and excess hair while preserving the dog’s natural coat, unless severe matting requires a different approach.
Proper grooming isn’t simply about removing hair.
It’s also about helping prevent discomfort, maintaining good skin hygiene, and allowing potential health issues to be noticed sooner.
🐶 A well-maintained dog is a more comfortable dog… and a coat that can truly do its job of protecting the skin.
