Yesterday was Xhiggy’s 12th birthday, so of course we had to celebrate by doing all of his favourite things!
🎉

A forest hike, new toys to shred within the day, a birthday cake from Three Dog Bakery Vancouver (which was a huge hit), and lots of love from his family.

This guy just keeps proving to me that he is up to the task at twelve years old - he keeps up with my young-ins on our adventures and proves to everyone that he wants to keep working.

As a professional dog trainer, I so often see owners try to avoid all stressful situations for their dog, and it is SUCH a damaging mentality for your puppy.

Now, I’m not telling you to put your 8-week puppy in a super stressful and overwhelming environment. I’m saying that small amounts of stress are beneficial for your puppy to allow them to problem solve and work through stressful moments.

Take Tucker in this video for example: he was so scared to climb things when I met him and would often get stuck (even though he could physically do the task). Instead of codling him and carrying him down, I would let him figure it out with huge amounts of encouragement and praise every time. Now on our adventures, he can clear every physical task or without issue and without stress.

Stress is inevitable. You are not always going to be able to make your dog’s entire life “stress-free”. It’s important to give them the skills to deal with that stress as puppies, rather than when your dog has crippling anxiety at two or three :)

Sunshine and lovely temperatures brought us to the beach and was perfect for some extra long hikes in the forest this week. Lots of time in the water was certainly welcomed by the dogs!

Swipe to see the sweetest friendship grow ➡️

I first met Billie at 9 weeks old after her family completed my puppy prep program, and the connection between her and Arthur was instant.

He has been the most perfect teacher throughout her training and adventures, demonstrating everything from how to be a neutral dog to perfect recall to dock diving.

Better yet, Billie has brought out the goofiest side of him, and these two are total hams together, but then can dial everything right back in to be hyper-engaged with me at the snap of my fingers. Billie is only 9 months old, and Arthur is 2, so having this level of reliability for two young dogs is something I am incredibly proud of (with a huge kudos to Billie’s family to being so on top of our training).

Many more years of adventuring are to come with these two ♥️

Who said dog walking can’t be cinematic?!

Inspired by the resurgence of film & watching movies in an IMAX theatre (thank you The Odyssey & Christopher Nolan), these shots just had to be shared! Sometimes the bigger picture really is better, and seeing the shot in its full form allows you to see it the way it was meant to be experienced.
