All dogs benefit from an activity that is medium arousal and mimics a natural behaviour (licking, sniffing, foraging, chewing) to help them transition from higher arousal activities (running, walks, playing, excitable activities) so that they can eventually transition to low arousal (rest and sleep).

This is especially obvious for more energetic and hyperactive dogs but it still applies to all dogs. Having a routine that cycles from high arousal to medium to then low arousal helps dogs regulated.

Some dogs are naturally good at cycling through these, and others need our help to guide them before it starts to become a habit.

Jericho is turning 8 in a few days, he spends every afternoon licking a small amount of raw frozen food from this toy. This is an activity he even requests for when we are in other spaces not in our home as it is something he looks forward to.💕

Clients often hesitate or question if we say their dog might be in pain when they see their dogs being extremely active and no obvious signs of pain (limping, yelping or whining) are visible.

To the average person there was nothing that could indicate that the inner canal of his spinal cord was tethered to a string like tissue making movement quite painful and restrictive.

Dogs in pain don’t always restrict their activity or refrain from it. They are unable to associate pain with the activity that exaggerates it. For pain to be associated to an activity the pain must happen instantly but muscle pain, soreness etc can take a few hours to set in.

Also our dogs are captive and have very little autonomy to choose when to have access to outdoor activities. The motivation to enjoy the activities can often overpower the hesitation even if there is associated pain.

TLDR: All this to say, dogs in pain will still do all the normal fun activities and can push through pain until it’s too much pain. Do not rule out pain because your dog continues to be active.

Pain is hard to identify in dogs and can be less obvious. You may need more than one vet and professionally to help identify it. Areas to investigate — musculoskeletal, GI, dental, neurology, nerve pain, dermatology, nail care and other underlying physiological issues.

Tethered Cord Syndrome (TCS) in dogs is a rare neurological condition where the spinal cord is abnormally anchored, restricting its movement and causing tension. This stretching often leads to chronic lower back pain, rear limb weakness, and gait abnormalities. It is sometimes called Occult Tethered Cord Syndrome (OTCS) when structural abnormalities aren’t immediately visible on standard MRI scans (source: Canada West Veterinary Hospital)

Just an appreciation post for Charlie who is definitely one of the most charming cats I’ve met.

Also PS: YES SPOIL YOUR PETS. They deserve to be.

Would you believe me if I said the “Sport Mode” dog in this video was TERRIFIED of her nails even being touched in the past!?

Before we could ever try to get her comfortable with clipping her nails — we introduced her to the scratch board.

A board (or pvc pipe split in half like in the video)

COARSE grit sandpaper
+
Glue to bind the two

and off we go to teach our dog to paw at the board!

Caring for our dogs with their cooperation requires us to change the approach from how a human would do a task to what would motivate the dog to do it!

We didn’t abandon nail trims and desensitization towards it — but this gave us ample time to work on the slow but fearless progression towards it.

Today we can cut her nails, file them ourselves or have her file them for us (as you can see) 😬

Some other tips for nail care:
— 1 nail a day
— breaks in between each paw or each nail even
— sedative medication for nail trim days
— slow progression

Your dogs are capable of being cooperative if you’re willing to listen to their signals and allow room for breaks.

This one is a big loss, and one that will take time to recover from.

There comes a dog in your life that isn’t yours but could very well be. They etch themselves into your heart ❤️

Bella is my friend’s dog, but I got to be an Auntie to her and boy was I lucky for it.

I don’t know what it was but I GOT HER. Every moody grumble because she doesn’t want to be pet too long, and every cheeky buttery move to get more food from us. The policing of our pesky male dogs Vinnie and Jer and the loyal search dog for when they went a bit too far.

She has been such a good mentor to my Jerry and has taught me so much about dogs that is hard to come by without first hand experience.

We have had so many adventures camping and hiking as a group and it will likely never be the same without our cool calm and collected girl! But we know it was time and that she’s free from illness and pain ❤️

Gordita (lil fatty — she never was), Mumu, Bells, Bella — we love you so so much! Rest in Peach baby 🕊️
