In the early years of BCC, Cali, Ginger, Shadow and Oreo, four at risk feral kitties joined our barn program. They were welcomed by Maria, as members of her family farm where, for more than seven years, Ginger and his ‘feline family’ have enjoyed wonderful lives, lovingly cared for.

Over the years, Maria kept in touch, sending updates and pictures of the quartet, enjoying their playtime in the barn, meal times or basking in the sun at their rural home.

Sadly last fall, Cali gained her angel wings and today Maria reached out to share the sad news that Ginger too gained his wings, now reunited with his friend Cali.

As shared by Maria:

The fella we called Ginger passed away peacefully with us by his side.

We made him as comfortable as we could as he wanted our comfort right near the end. He is now resting peacefully with his favourite bed.

Ginger and Shadow were best friends, they stuck to each other like glue most of the time, so we left his body in the barn for a while so his friends could say goodbye. Shadow seems to be doing alright. Sometimes I think they understand better than we do.

I don’t have a lot of pictures of Ginger as unless it was meal time and Ginger was yelling at me for being seconds late, he wasn’t very social. But I understood him and that was okay with me. It was what he preferred.

They certainly capture our hearts in their own special way

As much as we practice TNR (trap/neuter/return), there are cases, such as Gingers’, that relocation is both necessary and life saving. Although we don’t know much about Ginger’s life prior to landing in an out of region shelter, we do know that he was most certainly cared for and adored since joining Maria’s family in early 2019.

Although we have evolved over the years, now assisting feral, semi feral and domestic cats and kittens, feral cats are still very near and dear to our hearts 💕

Along with our deepest condolences to Maria and her family, we also extend our heartfelt gratitude for providing Ginger, Cali, Shadow and Oreo a quiet home, where each was accepted and afforded the opportunity to live wonderful lives, on their terms.

Sleep well Ginger boy as you and Cali fly free together.

** UPDATE **

This sweet momma (named Hazel Mae) and six tiny kittens joined our family at the end of May. Living on a rural property with other moms and a caboodle of kittens, these little ones ranged from 10 days to approximately 4 weeks young.

Tucked in the loving care of foster mom Kim and family, we are delighted to report everyone is doing fabulously. Although Hazel was most likely the biological mom of the calico kittens, she was a doting momma to everyone.

Foster mom Kim was diligent in ensuring that the little ones had one-on-one time with Hazel Mae, so they could nurse at their own pace without being displaced by the older kittens. Supplemental feedings of KMR were provided.

Our thanks to foster mom Kim and family for opening their hearts and home to this wee family while ensuring everyone received the best of care. Fostering truly saves lives 🥰

Our gratitude as well to everyone who has so thoughtfully supported our fundraising efforts and to those who have so generously donated towards or vetting and care costs. Keeping the tummies full has been quite a task!

Although it’s been a hectic kitten season, it has been a privilege to help so many little lives. One of the greatest rewards is watching their incredible transformations - from fragile beginnings to healthy, confident kitties ready for their next adventure. Every rescue, every bottle feeding, every sleepless night is worth it when we see these little lives blossom 🌸

At a year young, this beautiful lass is looking for her forever. ‘Spottie’ as named by foster mum Carrie’s boys, is a striking dilute calico.

But Spottie isn’t just another pretty face. This gal has an equally beautiful disposition. Cared for in a busy foster home, Spottie is a lover of humans, dogs and other kitties. She is also great with children.

A heartwarming update on recently adopted Stitch and Emmia.

“Just a little update from Emmia and Stitch. They have settled in nicely. Pretty sure Emmia owns our house now and Stitch has food order requests daily. They are eating well. Playful and very affectionate.

We love them both. They have such fun personalities and are amazing. Such a wonderful addition to our family❤️”

After another busy day, we take a moment to put things into perspective.

Peach recently joined her new home where she was welcomed by both her human family as well as her new big sister, BCC alumni Daisy.

When Daisy was first welcomed into her new home, she had a big brother to greet her. Unfortunately, Devon unexpectedly passed and Daisy was heartbroken, missing him tremendously. In need of a new bff, human mom Justine adopted Baby Peach.

As you can see, it was a match made in heaven🫶🏻. Although not biological siblings, Daisy and Peach are most certainly FAMILY. And Daisy has taken on her new role of big sis quite seriously, absolutely adoring her younger sibling.

These precious, tiny faces were found under a boat by a property owner preparing for the summer season. He immediately secured them, bringing them inside. When we received the call for help, we knew of course, that where there are kittens, there is a momma. A trap was set and within minutes, momma was secured.

Late last evening mom and babies arrived at my home where they were weighed and reunited with their mom. Unfortunately, momma is quite spicy and a closely monitored camera revealed their extremely stressed momma wasn’t feeding or caring for them and with her behaviour, concerns were raised about the safety of her littles.

This morning, a 6th kitten was found in the long grass near the boat and a second transfer was in place. Early this afternoon, lucky number six was reunited with his siblings. Momma however, still wasn’t engaging with her kittens 😞

With a foster family full of kittens of all ages and stages, with many bottle babies and a caboodle adult cats, we reached out to our friends at Oshawa Animal Service Center to see if they could lend a helping hand with six tiny tummies. Within minutes, the OAS team had a foster in place and a third transfer was in the works. One final supplemental feeding and our six mew arrivals were off!

TRUSTED RESCUE PARTNERSHIPS are INVALUABLE. The OAS team had already assisted us last weekend after the unexpected arrival of a sweet momma and kittens. Yet, they were still willing to share their resources with a rescue in need of a helping paw.

Meanwhile, our friends at the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes are assisting us with 7 kittens found on a rural property in Woodville, two of whom are in critical condition. And our friends at Pickering Animal Services have also stepped up, offering assistance.

We are also keeping both the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society York Region Animal Centre and the The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society/Humane Society of Durham Region busy keeping up with spay/neuters of both our ferals and our domestics. Both organizations have been incredibly supportive and helpful.

Whitby Animal Services Centre has kindly been providing us with much needed food and supplies, along with The Kibble Project. Keeping so many tummies full is a monumental (and very costly) task and we appreciate their generosity and kindness.

Many individuals are also instrumental in providing transportation for all of these cats and kittens. Hundreds of kilometres were travelled yesterday and today (and every day!) as we work together to make a difference.

Tonight we will rest … knowing that although tomorrow will be an equally frantic day, lives are being saved. We recognize that although we simply cannot save them all, so much is accomplished when we work TOGETHER. Collectively we are and will continue to make an impact as we celebrate every life enhanced by kindness.
