Torch River Sled Dog Race Inc. The Torch River Run Sled Dog Race Association was organized in the summer of 2009 to promote a world class mid-distance sled dog race.

A group of both active and retired mushers got together to establish a ten dog continuous unassisted race of 200 miles or more that would be a qualifier for the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest for the more advanced mushers, with an 80 mile 6-dog race for the less experienced, recreational musher to be included. At our original meeting, a board of 7 directors were elected and the name of Torch River Run Sled Dog Race was chosen. A motion to be incorporated was also made at that time. The name comes from a previous small race that was held in the Candle Lake area in which we crossed the Torch River several times. The original 200 mile 10-dog race went from Christopher Lake to Tobin Lake and the 6-dog went from Fishing Lake to Tobin Lake using the same route, the majority of which was on existing snowmobile trails. Although the first couple of races were successful it became very clear that in order to continue with our original goal, we needed a lot more help and money. With the declining interest in the 10-dog event and the increased interest in a 6-dog event, at our 2012 Annual meeting a motion was made for our 2013 race that we hold an 8-dog, 2-day, 40 miles per day event, all in the Christopher Lake area using existing groomed trails. This format was so successful that the event continues on. As with any organized event it takes an incredible amount of volunteers on a year round basis. The sponsors also play a major part and are greatly appreciated. Without them it would be very difficult to hold an event like this. However, most important of any sled dog race are the mushers. Without their support there would be no need for any of the rest.

WANT A SPOT IN THE INAUGURAL NISBET FOREST ODYSSEY?

Registration opens November 1. Twenty spots — ten Pro, ten Explorer.

Entry is by email only, to [email protected]. That keeps the order honest and makes sure the rules are in your hands before you're in the field. No sneaking in early.

When you email, send:
· Your name
· Kennel name
· Phone number
· Email address
· Class — Pro or Explorer

We'll reply with the rules, the waiver, and e-transfer details. Your spot is confirmed once the fee and signed waiver are back. Until then it's held in the order your entry arrived.

Dates to keep:
· Nov 1 — registration opens
· Dec 14 — last day for a full refund. Unfilled spots in one class open to the other class's waitlist
· Jan 4 — entries close, purse totals announced
· Jan 22–24 — race

Every dollar of entry fees goes back out as prize money, so the purse grows with the field. Sponsorship on top of that.

Three weeks before the Canadian Challenge. Four weeks before The Pas. Come get sharp, or come for a hell of a weekend on good trail.

Now is the time to secure those race places...we don't want you to miss out. So here's the info that you need to register your place for 2027.

Registration open NOW : 00:01 October 03 2026
Registration closes: 00:00 November 04 2026 (or sooner if we are full)
Maximum number of teams: 15 (FIFTEEN)
Registration fee: $600

We only have 15 spaces for teams this year, and we will only be accepting registrations by email as we did last year. (This is to help us keep track of who registers, and when, as well as ensuring you are in receipt of our race rules before you join our 2027 community.) We will have a waiting list if you miss out in the first wave of registrations.

When we get your email we’ll send you a copy of race rules and an e-transfer address so that you can send your registration fee of $600 to secure your place. We’ll take your fee as acknowledgement that you’ve read and understand our race rules.

Once we have all of your info and once your registration payment has cleared, we’ll start introducing you to our fabulous Underdog community on our social channels.

And a very happy start of dog training season to everyone! Snow dancing starting very soon.

We do have some race updates to share with you.

Firstly we will be bringing the race date forward to December 18 2026 - almost guaranteeing being the first race in your calendar, and an opportunity for some pre-Christmas fun as well.

Our trail will be approximately 80km, and there will be a 3 hour layover in our camp at the half way point.

Registration will open on October 17 2026 and our registration fee will be $250 (Canadian). All registrations will be done by email, ([email protected]) and we'll publish details of how to do this nearer the time.

We want to make this race intimate and fun, so will have a maximum TEN teams entry limit. There'll be a tail-gate banquet at the finish line...Santa suits are optional!

We really hope you'd like to join us to run the trails raced on by our legendary friend Jerry Joinson, in whose memory this race is honoring. A celebration of his life, dogs, friends and family, and a chance to catch up, make new friends, talk about sled dogs, laugh about life, and just have some fun.

Registration opens for the Under Dog 100 next month! Another great race to add to the calendar, and it’s just under a month after the Torch River Run!

We’re so excited to share that race registration will open at midnight (MST) on OCTOBER 3 2026. Less than one month away. 🤩🤩

Let’s get that date in your diaries….we will only have 15 slots up for grabs, and we won’t accept any sneaky registrations before we open. 😏

We’re keeping our 2026 registration fee of $600 for 2027. And we’ll only be taking registrations using our email address. (This really helps us keep track of who registers and when, as well as ensures you’re in receipt of our race rules before you join our ‘class of 2027)
