Did you know your dog can predict the future? 🔮🪄

Yes its true, and it doesn't take any special hocus pocus.

Dogs are experts at pattern recognition, and once they notice a pattern, they remember it. This is what we talk about when we say “dogs are always learning, even if were not teaching them”.

Your dog is paying attention to what you do, and what happens in their environment. Each time a sequence repeats with the same outcome, the pattern is reinforced for the dog. When intentionally training dogs, we use this mechanism to help the dog learn what we want them to do, but it also happens on its own every day. It can show up in desirable ways, neutral ways, or undesirable ways.

Dogs might learn that “click!” from a clicker predicts a treat.

Dogs might learn that the sound of your wake up alarm predicts that breakfast is coming soon.

Dogs might learn that you picking up their leash predicts they're going for a walk.

Dogs might learn that if they bark really loud at the people walking by, those people go away.

Dogs might learn that seeing another dog predicts something scary is likely to happen.

Being able to identify patterns and predict outcomes is ultimately a survival skill. Dogs repeat what works, and dogs remember what the outcome of a situation was, good or bad, beneficial or harmful.

So if it seems like your dog is predicting your moves before you make them when you go about your day, they actually are! No crystal ball required!

Today is World Mental Health Day and it deserves some reflection.

I have been privileged to work with pets with mental illnesses. People along the way have said that I have a way with animals. And giving it more thought, maybe it’s not talent, maybe it’s not a “way”. And then I thought a bit further.

Maybe it’s because when I look at them, I see a piece of myself reflecting back at me. Maybe watching the dog responding to every cue and wanting to be micromanaged but yet finds it terrifying to be just settle and be is a reflection of the world that we live in. That we humans live in a world that we weren’t designed for. That just doing nothing is hard.

When I see the dog that is afraid to show any fearful body language and that you can only see the worry by the watching the size of the pupils change, is a reflection is a mirror that society doesn’t find it ok to be frustrated or afraid.

When I see the pet that is afraid to eat in the presence of a human, I see the trauma and understand that letting your guard down for minute requires trust that has not been earned.

When I see dogs showing hesitation to do dog things, I see the child being told that the word doesn’t work like that and to grow up.

When I see the pet terrified of the groomer or vet, I remember the child that was held down for medical procedures and still can’t fathom those procedures as an adult.

So maybe, it’s not a way with animals; maybe it’s seeing the pain and trauma that is in me.

If you watch closely, most pets are honest with their body language. We, as humans, aren’t as much.

On this World Mental Health Day, let’s all remember that for the most part, we are living in a society that our biology wasn’t meant for. So be kind, show compassion, and know that it is ok to not be ok. If we all become a little more honest about our feelings, maybe we’ll be able to be a little bit more compassionate about our pets’ mental health needs as well.

Canine Sensory Rooms!

🕰 When: Saturday November 14th
🗺 Where: The Glenwood/Argyle Hall
💲Cost: 70$ per dog, one dog per session

Each session includes:
-Up to 35 minutes for your dog to explore the room
-I provide the treats, allergies will be accommodated
-While your dog is exploring, I will share my observations about their movement, behavior, the choices they make, and so on
-Your dogs session will be recorded, and afterwards I will email you a link to the video, as well as a short note on some of the important observations that I noted during your session if there were any

A sensory room session can be a great experience for dogs of all ages, sizes, abilities and personalities. It provides them with the opportunity for some slow and precise movement (kind of like a doggie yoga session), exploration at their own pace, and lots of mental enrichment through their senses, especially sniffing! The sensory room provides an excellent opportunity for appropriate and safe socialization to new situations, especially for younger dogs.

No one is at their best when theyre overtired, and that includes dogs. 🌙💤

Just like us, dogs of all ages need quality, restful sleep to have the brain space to make good decisions, learn new things, and regulate their nervouse system.

Dogs of different ages need different amounts of sleep per day, ranging from 16-20 hours a day for puppies, 12-14 hours a days for adults, and 14-20 hours a day for seniors.

Dogs usually have one big sleep over night (like what we do) and then they get the rest of their sleep by napping through the day.

This rest is especially important for puppies who are going through so many changes in their body and nervouse system. Even though a puppy or adolescent dog might seem like they have endless energy, letting them go and go and go all day with no sleep and no time to relax does way more harm than good.

A well rested and relaxed dog is a happy dog!

🐾Get a head start on socializing your puppy!

With this class you'll get to:
-Introduce your puppy to new sights, sounds, smells, and textures in a safe, fully fenced in, outdoor space,
-Work on some training and body handling basics in a supportive environment,
-give your puppy the opportunity for some play time with other puppies of the same age,
-and start building a positive connection with your puppy!

This class is for puppies between 8 to 16 weeks of age at the start of class.
Class will start Sunday October 25th, and run for 4 weeks. (25th, 1st, 8th, and 15th)
Time:1:00pm to 2:00pm
The cost is 150$, no tax.
Class will be outdoors, please dress accordingly for the weather.

At this young age, puppies learn through exploration and play. The Puppy Social Class is a great opportunity to join other new puppy owners as you grow and learn with your puppies together!

‘Let’sTalk Dog’ was a great success yesterday after noon. We had set out to create a forum where people could come and learn what is available in the community to promote happy dogs and their human connection. The turnout was amazing… encouraging us to organize more similar events. The group was very interactive. I am sure everyone had fun!
