🐾 Let’s talk Puppy Intros.

I’ve had a huge influx of puppies lately, so I thought this was a good time to explain what a puppy intro actually is and what you should expect from that first appointment.

A puppy intro isn’t about getting the perfect haircut.

It’s about introducing your puppy to grooming in a way that helps them learn that it’s safe.

For a puppy, grooming is A LOT.

A new person touching their feet, face, ears and body. Clippers vibrating against them. Scissors moving nearby. Water. A dryer. A grooming table. New sounds, smells and equipment they’ve never seen before.

And because puppies are puppies, they also tend to think half of my grooming tools are toys and will happily try to bite, grab or play with them. That doesn’t mean they’re being bad. They’re learning.

During a puppy intro, I’m paying attention to how your puppy reacts to things like:

• Being handled all over their body
• Having their feet and nails touched
• The sound and vibration of clippers
• Brushing and combing
• Bathing
• The dryer
• Standing safely for grooming
• Having their face, ears and mouth handled

We may do a little trimming. We may do a bath and dry. We may accomplish quite a bit.

Or we may spend most of the appointment simply getting comfortable with the process.

Both are successful puppy intros.

I’m not interested in pushing a puppy through something just so they leave looking perfect. Those first experiences can shape how they feel about grooming for years.

Sometimes that means taking breaks. Sometimes it means changing how I do something. Sometimes it means stopping before everything is finished and trying again another day.

The goal is to build confidence, trust and good grooming habits while they’re young.

Because teaching a puppy that grooming is safe is a whole lot easier than trying to undo fear later.

Start early. Keep it positive. Build the relationship first.

Because stress-free is beautiful. 🐾

Because we operate strictly 1-on-1, an empty day like this is incredibly rare. We want to dedicate these sudden open slots specifically to dogs who struggle in busy, high-stimulation commercial environments.

I genuinely don’t even know what to say.

Seeing Sudsy Paws Dog Grooming listed as a nominee for Specialized Service Business of the Year feels completely surreal.

I built Sudsy Paws because I wanted to do grooming differently. I wanted to create a space where dogs didn’t have to fit into the “normal” grooming process. Where the anxious ones, the fearful ones, the reactive ones, the seniors, the disabled dogs, and the dogs who just need a little more patience could be met where they are.

There have been a lot of moments where I’ve questioned myself, overthought everything, stressed about whether I was doing enough, and wondered if what I was building was actually making a difference.

So seeing my business recognized like this means more than I can really put into words.

To every person who has trusted me with their dog, recommended me, shared my posts, supported my business, or cheered me on along the way, thank you.

Sudsy Paws would not be what it is without all of you.

And somehow, after all of that, I get to say that Sudsy Paws Dog Grooming is a 2026 Quinte Business Achievement Awards nominee.

That still feels absolutely insane.
