3 MYTHS about Leptospirosis and lake safety

07/29/2026

Keep Your Pets Safe by the Water! 🐾🏖️
Summer lake days and pool parties are a blast, but did you know natural water sources carry hidden risks for our furry family members?
Before your dog takes the plunge or laps up lake water, keep these essential safety tips in mind from the team at Pet Pal Vet Clinic:
🧪 Beware of Lake Infections & Leptospirosis (Lepto):
Natural bodies of water—lakes, streams, and even puddles—can carry harmful bacteria like Leptospirosis, which spreads through wildlife urine. When dogs swim in or drink contaminated lake water, they can contract severe kidney or liver infections.

💉 Get Protected with the Lepto Vaccine: The safest way to enjoy the lakes all season long is prevention! Asking us about the Leptospirosis vaccine gives your pet the crucial protection they need before splashing in natural water.

🦺 Suit Up with a Life Jacket: Even strong doggy-paddlers get tired or caught in lake currents. A well-fitted pet life vest with a top handle makes retrieval easy and stress-free.
💧 Rinse Off Afterwards: Lake algae, chlorine, salt, and sand can irritate sensitive skin and paws. Always give your pet a thorough freshwater rinse after swim time.
🚫 Bring Your Own Fresh Drinking Water: Prevent your pup from lapping up pool chemicals or bacteria-laden lake water by bringing a portable bowl and plenty of clean, cool water.
🏖️ Provide Shade & Watch Hot Surfaces: Dock wood, sand, and deck pavement get scorching fast. Offer plenty of shaded rest spots to prevent heat exhaustion.
Is your dog up to date on their Leptospirosis vaccine before lake season? 🐶💬

🐾 Summer Heat Safety: “If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.” ☀️
As the temperatures rise, it’s easy to forget that asphalt and concrete can get scorching hot—much hotter than the actual air temperature! On an 85°F (29°C) day, the pavement can reach a painful 130°F (54°C). That’s enough to burn your furry friend’s sensitive paw pads in just a few minutes.
Before you head out for a walk, try the 7-Second Rule: 👉 Place the back of your hand flat on the pavement. 👉 If you can’t comfortably hold it there for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your pet!
💡 Quick Tips for Cool Paws:
    •    Walk early or late: Stick to the early mornings or late evenings when the ground has cooled down.
    •    Stick to the grass: Walk on shady, grassy areas whenever possible.
    •    Invest in booties: If you must walk on pavement, consider protective dog boots.

Pet Pal Breed Spotlight: The Golden Retriever! ✨
It’s no secret that Golden Retrievers consistently rank as one of the most popular family dogs in the world. They’re sweet, goofy, and fiercely loyal. But did you know these fun facts about our favorite golden friends?
🐾 They have Scottish royalty roots! The breed was first developed in the Scottish Highlands during the mid-1800s by a man named Lord Tweedmouth.
🐾 They are natural helpers. Because of their high intelligence and gentle demeanor, Goldens are the go-to choice for vital roles like guide dogs, therapy animals, and search-and-rescue teams.
🐾 They are social butterflies. Goldens generally love everyone
A quick health note from the Pet Pal team: While Goldens are wonderfully hearty dogs, keeping them at a healthy weight is crucial to protecting their hips and joints as they grow older. Regular exercise and a balanced diet keep that signature bounce in their step!
