The first week with an adopted bird is full of little discoveries.

Set aside a few quiet minutes each day for a simple enrichment ritual: talk softly, offer gentle play, hide a few favorite treats for foraging, or simply sit together and let trust grow at your bird's pace.

What is one new thing you discovered about your bird this week? A favorite treat, a funny sound, a curious habit, or a moment that made you smile? Share it in the comments so our Avian Haven community can celebrate with you.

A healthy start can help your new bird feel at home with confidence.

Begin with a visit to an avian veterinarian, then learn your bird's normal eating and breathing patterns. A simple daily observation log can help you notice changes early and share useful details with your vet.

Small notes today can support better care tomorrow. What is one wellness habit that helped your bird settle in?

Meet Cobi, a young, completely wild Military Macaw (Ara militaris) from Zapopan, Mexico, who appears to have self-appointed himself supervisor of our partners at Fundación Ornitológica TXORI’s rehabilitation programme and pre-release aviary.

Cobi first appeared at TXORI in 2020, calling to the macaws from the surrounding trees. According to Víctor Busteros, Director of Fundación Ornitológica TXORI, curiosity gradually got the better of him and he began venturing closer, eventually becoming a regular visitor.

Then, after disappearing for several months, Cobi returned the following spring with a flock of wild Military Macaw friends.
Since then, he has continued to come and go entirely on his own terms. Sometimes he stays for days, sometimes only a few hours, but when he visits, he can often be found watching the macaws, calling back and forth with them and keeping a very close eye on proceedings.

Víctor now recognises Cobi entirely by his behaviour: the tree he lands in, the way he approaches the aviary and even how comfortable he is staying nearby while food is being prepared. No ID band, just a very familiar personality.

Whether those squawks are encouragement to the macaws or instructions to the team, we’ll leave that to Cobi.

For Víctor, Cobi is much more than a macaw: he considers him a CHANEQUE, an entity connected to the forest and a protector of his environment – a living reminder of what the TXORI team is working to preserve.

The macaws Cobi is visiting have been rescued from the illegal wildlife trade and are now being rehabilitated for release. The newly built pre-release aviary gives them an important space to prepare for life beyond human care before taking that next step, hopefully flying free alongside wild Military Macaws like Cobi and his flock.
Macaws are highly social birds, communicating constantly with one another and forming strong flock relationships. We can’t know exactly how Cobi and his flock will interact with released birds in the future, but seeing wild macaws choosing to visit and communicate with those preparing for release is incredibly encouraging.
Cobi doesn’t belong to TXORI. He belongs to the wild.

But he does seem determined to make sure the TXORI team are taking good care of the macaws who may soon be sharing his neighbourhood.

The World Parrot Trust is proud to support TXORI’s rehabilitation and release work through the Parrot Conservation Grant, funded jointly with Natural Encounters, Inc. (NEI), which supported the construction of the pre-release aviary.

Thank you Victor & TXORI for sharing this story with us 💚

Trust does not need to be rushed - it grows at your bird's pace.

Try these gentle steps to help your feathered friend feel safe:

- Sit nearby and let your bird observe you
- Speak softly and calmly
- Offer a favorite treat without pressure
- Watch body language and give space when needed
- Celebrate small wins, like staying relaxed, taking a treat, or moving closer

Every calm moment is progress. Physical contact can come later - or may not be your bird's favorite way to connect. A trusting relationship is built through patience, respect, and consistency.

What small trust milestone has your bird celebrated recently? Share it with our Avian Haven community so we can cheer you on!

A curious bird is a happy bird! 🐦

Your bird's cage can be more than a place to rest - it can be a safe space to move, explore, and learn.

Try adding:
- Natural perches with varied textures and sizes
- Safe bird toys for chewing, climbing, and play
- Food puzzles that make mealtime more engaging
- Open floor space for walking, foraging, and exploring

Change things gradually and check every item regularly for wear or hazards. A little variety can encourage healthy movement and give your feathered friend something new to discover.

Where is your bird's favorite corner? Share a photo in the comments - we would love to see your setup and inspire fellow bird lovers!

New bird parent? A healthy routine starts with the basics. 💚

Offer clean, fresh water every day, and choose a balanced, quality diet suited to your bird's species, age, and needs. Safe variety can include bird-safe fresh foods, introduced gradually and in small portions. Remove uneaten fresh food promptly, and always consult an avian veterinarian before making major diet changes.

A little consistency can help your feathered companion thrive. What healthy food does your bird enjoy most? Tell us below, and share this with a new bird parent!

The first 24 hours can shape a new bird's sense of safety. 🐦

A quiet corner, fresh food and water, familiar routines, and gentle observation give your newly adopted feathered friend time to settle in. Let them set the pace - sometimes the kindest welcome is simply being nearby without asking for too much.

What is one thoughtful step you took to help a new bird feel at home? Share your story and inspire another bird parent!
