But when first starting out, before rules and foundations and laid, telling your dog what to and not to do helps keep them safe.

So when socializing your dog, don’t just let your dog go up to any dog they meet at any time. It should be on your terms after you’ve assessed that the other dog is a good dog to interact with!

Sometimes the most important training decision you can make is knowing when not to train.

If your dog is overwhelmed, your first priority should be helping them feel safe enough to think, process, and engage with you again. Not to put them in situations they’re not prepared to handle.

That might mean creating distance, leaving the situation, lowering the pressure, or simply giving them time and stopping all together for the time being.

Because a dog who feels safe has more capacity to learn.

Our goal as trainers is to set your dog up for success. Even if that means telling you to stop.
