Spin is one of the simplest ways to teach a dog that paying attention pays off.
Most dogs are great at moving in a straight line toward something exciting. Spin asks for something different, turning the whole body in a circle while still tracking a lure with their nose and eyes. That combination of movement and focus is exactly why it’s such a useful skill to build early.
In this video, the lure stays low and close, right at nose height, and the circle happens slowly enough that success is easy. Every full turn gets marked and rewarded right away.
Once that pattern is solid, the hand motion alone becomes enough to cue the spin, no food needed to get the body moving. It’s a small thing, but it teaches a dog that paying close attention to a hand signal pays off.
Spin also builds coordination and flexibility most everyday walks never touch, since turning tight circles uses muscles a straight line walk just doesn’t.
For a dog still learning body awareness, that’s real physical and mental work disguised as something fun.
