Apparently we've been much better at taking care of dogs than posting them lately 😂

We are still here. Still walking. Still adventuring. Still coming home covered in some combo of dog hair, mud and slobber.

I have been going back and forth about sharing this because posting it makes it real in a new way 🌈

But I want to honour her. I want the world to know that she was here, that she was deeply loved, and that I am grieving her.

Olive was my soul.

She came into my life unexpectedly when I was at a big transition point. I had just graduated with my Master of Social Work and was looking for my first job. She came with me as I started working and living in a new place.

She was with me through periods of loneliness, and she filled me up.

She had an adorable chirpy little meow and was the least graceful cat I have ever met. She clomped around and wasn’t a great jumper. She was a bit like me.

She welcomed Keith into our family by pooping on his pillow and giving him a fair amount of stink eye.

She perfected kitty grumpy face. But when she looked at me, I felt like I could see the love radiating through her.

We had 17 years together, but a lifetime wouldn’t have been long enough.

I try to comfort myself by telling myself she is with Gus. They loved each other so much, and it isn’t surprising that she left me four months after he did. Maybe they couldn’t bear to be apart either.

The grief is huge. She wasn’t just my cat. She was a piece of my heart.

I’m not ready to process this publicly or find meaning in it. I’m not okay, and I don’t know what showing up here will look like for a while. But I couldn’t carry on without acknowledging her and how much she mattered.

Happy anniversary to my favourite person.

I look at this photo and think about how much has happened since that day. The really good stuff. The really hard stuff. The completely ordinary stuff. The things we planned and all the things we absolutely did not.

And through all of it, I still really, really like doing life with you ❤️

A little bit different post today. 🐾

Some of you know me only as a dog walking lady — and that's totally fine, that's what you signed up for! But outside of Dog Social, I also work with women on nervous system regulation and self-worth, through my other business, Grounding with Ruth.

This October, I'm co-hosting a day journey in the forest called "Let Go and Let In" — a full day of release, breathwork, movement, fire, and quiet, at a 42-acre sanctuary in the Blue Mountains.

It's not really a "dog" post, I know. But if you know a woman who's been running on empty for a while — maybe that's you — I wanted you to know this exists. Link in bio for details.
