While growing up, I trained in technical veterinary care, pet behaviour modification and professional dog grooming. Soon enough, my mission became my career and by the time I was 16, in 1990, The Groom Room was born. It's been a labour of love as I've grown my business to become two thriving locations in North York and I have carefully hand selected the most remarkable staff who share my ideals and expectations and have worked along side me to nurture my vision. When visiting The Groom Room, whether for a groom or a daycare frolic with friends, your pets are being cared for with the same love and attention as we give to our own treasured pets at home. It is such a joy to come to work to see dogs rolling around in play (too often after their baths!), lounge around watching the fun, sleep in a sunny spot or get one on one attention by one of my adoring staff members. I look forward to this new form of communication which I intend to use to keep you up to date with the goings on at The Groom Room, as well as to share important tips to help maintain your pets' health and maintenance AND to extend discounts when available. I am so proud of the goings on at both locations and on behalf of myself, Portia, Nataliya, Sandy, Dianne, Nadia and Yolande, I thank you for trusting us with your pets.

Some dogs find grooming very stressful. Weā€™re sharing this video to show how veterinary guidance and calm, confident handling can support a dog who struggles. Thereā€™s nothing better than when we work as a united team with owners and Vets.

Behaviour modification and training can help dogs build comfort and coping skills gradually, so grooming may become easier over time. That learning takes time, and dogs who need regular coat or nail care may still need support during the process. This isnā€™t a judgment about anyoneā€™s training or effort; every dog, family, and history is different.

Anti anxiety medication is intended to help ease fear or stress. Itā€™s different from sedation medication which is intended to make a dog sleepier or less alert. The goals are different, though some anxiety medication can also cause sleepiness. A veterinarian decides what is appropriate for each dog.

This boy has historically found grooming very difficult. The stress is avoidable for dogs and puts them and their groomer at higher risk of injury. After speaking with his veterinarian, his mom arranged an anxiety medication plan for grooming. In this video, he remains alert and aware, and youā€™ll still see some minor reactivity during his nail trim. Reactivity doesnā€™t always come in the form of aggression. Stressed dogs can twist and pull and pant excessively which is hard on their bodies and minds.

Our goal is your dogā€™s comfort and safety, as well as the groomerā€™s. Medication was one part of Odieā€™s support, along with quiet, confident handling. He is more relaxed overall, giving us a better opportunity to make grooming a more positive experience over time.

Medication isnā€™t recommended for most dogs, and we understand that clients may have questions. If grooming is difficult for your dog, talk with your veterinarian about options.
