They're beautiful, critical to the health of our ecosystems and most people are completely oblivious as to how they protect us every day. They're reptiles and today is National Reptile Awareness Day.

In the wild, reptiles face terrible threats including - but not limited to - habitat loss, climate change, road traffic, smuggling, abuse and persecution; while in captivity, many reptiles suffer from living in poor environments with inadequate diets because people don't do their research on how to properly care for them.

We encourage everyone to take some time to learn more about the amazing reptiles with whom we share this planet. Did you know that they play a vital role in maintaining balance in our ecosystems by being both predator and prey? Reptiles are also extremely helpful to humans by protecting our health, homes and food supplies from rodents and insects.

Reptiles deserve our respect, admiration and gratitude - instead of the fear and revulsion expressed by many people. Please join us in celebrating our reptile friends today and every day! Happy National Reptile Awareness Day!

Kings and queens may have sceptres, but our patient Zazou the yellow-sided green-cheeked conure has something much better - the "Feather of Judgement!" Her mom sent us this photo of Zazou at home with a stray feather that she uses to lay down the law. We think that all Zazou needs now is a little throne.

We are welcoming veterinary student Maitê, who has travelled all the way from Brazil to do her externship at our clinic! Maitê, who is originally from São Paulo, is starting the second week of her two-week externship today.

Maitê is in the final stretch of her veterinary studies at Metodista University of São Paulo and will be graduating next month. She already works with exotic animals in Brazil, but she wanted to do her externship at our clinic to gain international experience and improve her skills in a different environment - and she felt that our clinic would be the perfect fit!

With a week of her externship completed, Maitê says she is enjoying seeing the large volume of appointments and cases involving so many different species at our clinic. She adds that all of our staff have been patient and kind. And, as you can see, Maitê has become good friends with our patients - in this case, Eevee the bunny.

Thank you for choosing our clinic and travelling all the way from Brazil to do your externship with us, Maitê! We wish you a safe trip home, and want to offer you our best wishes and congratulations on your graduation from vet school next month!

We want to offer our congratulations to our patient Pickle the Alexandrine parakeet not only for his mad skateboarding skills, but also because he recently became a big brother! Pickle has been very good about sharing his time with mom with the new baby in the family. And we have no doubt that in a few years, Pickle will be teaching his little sibling how to skateboard.

Did you know that October 14th is National I Love You Day? Even though every day should be National I Love You Day, today is the perfect day to give your pets a little extra TLC because all you need is love!

These velociraptors aren't residents of Jurassic Park, but rather are our patients Zazou the yellow-sided green-cheeked conure (left) and Tintin the Quaker parakeet (right)! These BFFs came in for an appointment with our Dr. Nur who says that they get along well apart from occasional sibling argument. She adds that - despite the cheeky warning on their carrier - both of them are very cuddly birds and have fun playing when they're at home.

Thanksgiving is coming up this weekend with our thoughts turning to gratitude. And with October being Veterinary Technician Month, we want to give our most heartfelt thanks to our wonderful veterinary technicians - Dahlia, Elga, Amanda, Nikki and Joner - without whom our clinic could not function.

The many critical duties our veterinary technicians have at our clinic include triaging our patients, engaging with our clients, assisting in surgery, taking x-rays, giving treatments to our patients, ensuring our patients are comfortable, taking specimen samples, and operating diagnostic equipment.

To Dahlia, Elga, Amanda, Nikki and Joner - we want each of you to know that we deeply appreciate all of your hard work and dedication to the health and well-being of our patients, along with your commitment to our clinic. We thank you for all that you do!
