There have been a lot of posts this week about the terrible situation involving the B.C. Ostriches which were culled this week by the CFIA due to concerns over the avian flu. This piece (warning, has some profanity), is one of the best we have read this week. From our friend Faith.
"I’m angry. Actually angry.
They shot 1000 rounds in four hours.
A thousand bullets.
For 300 birds.
And this is what we’re calling humane?
Imagine what those birds went through.
The fear.
The thrashing.
The panic.
They didn’t “go peacefully.”
They fled. They suffered. They knew.
I am horrified.
Absolutely horrified.
But here’s the part nobody wants to talk about:
This isn’t some isolated “one-off tragedy.”
This is the reality for animals in Canada every single day.
Because while everyone is shocked about the ostriches, let’s not forget:
✅ Cows
✅ Pigs
✅ Chickens
✅ Sheep
✅ Ducks
✅ Turkeys
✅ Fish
All healthy, innocent animals with capacity to feel, to hold names, all that want to live.
They are loaded onto trucks and sent to die every single day in this country.
Same fear.
Same panic.
Same suffering.
Just hidden behind walls so people don’t have to look at it. Don't believe for one second that their death is peaceful. They use electric fu***ng prods to move them to their death. Many of these animals are as smart as your four year old child.
If you call yourself an animal lover?
Then you don’t get to pick and choose which lives matter to you.
You don’t get outrage for the ostriches and silence for the billions of farmed animals who go through hell because it’s “normal.”
If you truly love animals, you should care about ALL of them.
Not just the ones in the headlines.
Not just the ones whose stories shock you enough to click. This whole situation became about politics. Under the guise of animal loving Canadians. How can you protest these birds, calling them innocent animals and those who are contracted to kill them murders, then go home and eat a steak? DO YOU SEE THE IRONY?
This system is broken.
Animals are paying the price.
And pretending otherwise doesn’t make it go away.
If you actually care about animals, show up. Protest the dairies that rip mothers from their babies, protest the warehouses holding pigs in gestation crates EVERY DAY of their life, protest the barns holding thousands of chickens who will never feel grass under their feet or get to stretch their wings, or worse those held in battery cages so you can enjoy your eggs.
If you actually give a s**t, then give a s**t.
May these birds rest gently, free from the torture they endured. And may all Canadians take pause, look in your mirror and ask yourself why not the same outage for the other farmed animals in this country?"
