[ ANOTHER SHIH TZU HEADS HOME ]

In June we welcomed 15 Shih Tzu's out of 25 that were found abandoned in various fields in Ontario & the lucky ones that were found, were found within hours of one another and brought to various shelters.

One of the shelters was Hillside Kennels Animal Control. It was believed, in the shelter, that she had pyometra, a severe, life-threatening bacterial infection of the uterus that happens in unspayed female dogs, typically 2 to 8 weeks after a heat cycle.

So, Mattie's Place welcomed her.

Turns out she was in heat. We quickly resolved that with her spay. She also had sarcoptic mange and ear infections we managed for her.

Mops has come such a long way medically and has been an exceptional girl in foster care. She is super, super sweet and social and this week I had an opportunity to have her shine at a couple backstage events with MUNA & Julia Wolf | WOLF where everyone just loved her!

Yesterday, Mops was able to join her for-always person and officially celebrates her adoption day. They are an amazing duo and the perfect match for one another! And they live nearby, so I'll get to see Mops for grooming at our storefront location and I'm sure multiple visits through her lifetime!

[ WITH GRATITUDE ]

June is Pet Appreciation Month (also known as PAW Month), Pet Valu’s largest annual nationwide fundraising and community campaign under the Companions for Change initiative.

Individual store locations partner with specific rescues & shelters to fundraise in various forms throughout the month; raffle baskets, barbecue fundraisers, plant sales, paw sales, photo shoots, online auctions and many more creative ideas keeping their rescue of choice, top of mind, to raise as much money as possible in support.

Over $2.6 million was raised during its June 2026 Pet Appreciation Month campaign, supporting more than 500 animal-related causes, shelters and rescues across Canada

💰 Out of the $2.6 million, Pet Valu Bowmanville Clarington Centre raised a whopping $8,232.59 for Mattie's Place

The entire team hustled all month long, putting together so many fundraisers, including an online auction. I am incredibly grateful and appreciative for this tremendous collaboration by the Pet Valu Bowmanville Clarington Centre. I really, really appreciate every Pet Valu store that chooses to fundraise in June for Mattie's Place & every dollar makes a tremendous difference.

🙌" The Pet Valu Bowmanville Clarington Centre team truly went above and beyond, with the entire team volunteering time before their shifts and long after their shifts ended with prepping for each individual fundraiser they put together throughout the month to maximize money raised.

🙌" Thank you also to everyone that donated to the online auction and contributed in various ways to enhance each fundraiser.

🙌" Thank you also to the Pet Valu Bowmanville Clarington Centre customers that showed up and supported Mattie's Place! We have many fosters & adopters in the area and my granddaughter was raised in Bowmanville, now 16 years old, so I've spent many years in and out of the area and it's a community I appreciate so much.

100% of our PAWS proceeds raised from all the Pet Valu's including Pet Valu Bowmanville Clarington Centre will be used to cover Omen's cancer treatment that began in June with his final chemotherapy treatment in September, but with 2 more follow up appointments in December and March.

Omen has cost Mattie's Place in excess of $20,000 to date, since arriving in March from a Canadian shelter. His cancer treatment from June to September came in at a cost of $7,885.

He had an emergency hospital stay in June, from complications after his 2nd dose of chemo that did not go well for him: $3,893.99

There is an additional expected $4,000 to go for his 2 upcoming staging appointments. We did not fundraise for Omen's cancer treatment specifically, knowing we had the support of Pet Valu and PAWS month to see this cost through. We did request public support for his hospital stay.

We have not fundraised for his December & March 2027 appointments, obviously, as they haven't happened, but dependant on how the other stores did for their fundraising effort, their funds can be allocated toward Omen's costs.

So, massive thanks going out to the Pet Valu stores that choose Mattie's Place in June and extra thanks to Pet Valu Bowmanville Clarington Centre for kicking off the fundraising with the incredible $8,232.59 donation received yesterday.

[ WITH GRATITUDE ]

Thank you to team WOLF for sharing in some canine love yesterday with rescue dogs from Mattie's Place at The Opera House in the afternoon.

I have hosted many fundraisers and events at The Opera House spanning back 15 years, bringing back memories with friends here and gone, so it most certainly was a bittersweet time spent. IYKYK

Buddy, Mops & puppy Dougie (borrowed from Project Paws Dog Rescue) were once again exceptional. Mops stole the show by making her way onstage every opportunity she had to get high above the rest and look out to her audience. 👑

Thank you Live Nation Ontario for the invite and donation. Thank you Julia Wolf & team for being so kind to our pups.

These calm & controlled backstage events are incredibly beneficial to dogs & humans and I'm grateful Mattie's Place has the opportunity to have our dogs (and sometimes cats) shine.

[ THANK YOU MUNA ]

With appreciation to MUNA for hanging out with some of our Mattie's Place dogs yesterday for an hour in the afternoon, backstage before their show.

Really kind artists and crew with a obvious love for pets. Mops was the fan favourite of the afternoon and won everyone over immediately. I think would have run away with her if they could have!

Buddy showed the other dogs how to be a backstage dog with his 1 year of experience now doing so many of these events since joining me in foster care.

[ GROOMING AT Mattie's Place! ]

We officially have a groomer working out of our Mattie's Place - 2nd Chance Pet Market located at 53 Mutual Street, Toronto

Liliana has been grooming for many years in Mexico. When her & her partner moved to Canada, she continued her grooming career working for other groomers in and around the GTA.

Though having years of grooming experience under her belt, Liliana is a believer in always learning the newest grooming techniques, so she returned to school and dedicated a year of her life to education at Conestoga College earning her Pet Grooming certification.

I'm excited to officially welcome Liliana, who will be sharing our space, with a portion of her grooming proceeds supporting Mattie's Place as well as offering free grooms for up to 6 Mattie's Place dogs or cats in foster care per month!

This is a tremendous cost savings for Mattie's Place and between proceeds and complimentary grooms, will benefit Mattie's Place upwards of $2,000/monthly.

Liliana is a really thoughtful pet groomer. She is a huge believer in fear free methodology and really wants the experience to be great for your pet, so is dedicated to taking the time needed to ensure that happens. It was one of the things I really welcomed most about her when partnering up to share the space.

Though Liliana is an independent groomer, grooming under her business, Jollie Doggie, Mattie's Place will be supporting her efforts every step of the way & I hope you all join me in launching her entrepreneurial dream.

This week she is working on completing the space but is taking bookings now and will begin grooms October 18th!

We make these dogs (and cats) available for adoption with a $99 adoption fee and find amazing humans that appreciate project dogs that require a little extra something post adoption.
