[ THIS LITTLE GUY WAS 💔 ]

Meet 2 year old Bob. The absolute nicest boy you could hope to meet. Friendly & kind and so full of love and life.

He was surrendered to Oshawa Animal Service Center recently; citing he was struggling with housetraining and has "narcolepsy episodes" . This owner had him 4 months and the previous owner allegedly kept Bob in a crate almost around the clock & he just sat in his own filth day after day.

When I picked Bob up today, I was expecting the typical Frenchie breathing issues, but this was beyond what I've ever seen personally.

I often reference Frenchie's prior to BOAS surgery, living with a loosely placed plastic bag over their head. Bob is living with a plastic bag over his head, tied shut, with small holes pricked into the bag for breathing. Or at least that replicates his current breathing state.

He struggles, horrifically for each and every breathe.

He has had collapsing episodes in the shelter. This was probably also what was happening when the owner stated he had "narcolepsy episodes". Bob was likely passing out from lack of oxygen, not falling asleep suddenly.

I took Bob straight to Toronto Veterinary Emergency Hospital - TVEH this morning after picking him up from the shelter.

Today, Bob had a temporary fix; a palatopexy. They surgically pulled the excessive, hanging tissue of the soft palate away from Bob's windpipe and secured it to the top of his throat, improving his airflow and decreasing his acute respiratory distress.

On Friday, Bob will have surgery with Dr. Porter to remove the excess tissue that blocks his windpipe and open up his nostrils, so he can have some breathing relief, ending this sweet boys immense suffering as he fought for 2 years, for each breath of air.

Bob is also cryptorchid (his testicle is up in his abdomen) so he will need a more complex neuter, which Dr. Porter will do as well for Bob on Friday.

This is going to be costly, in the $1,000's. I don't have an estimate. I didn't even ask. But he needs a specialty surgeon and a hospital stay post-op while he recovers, given the severity of this case.

Please help me welcome, 20 pound Bob, to the Mattie's Place rescue family. I'm really happy to have him here with us today.

[ NO-BUNNY COMPARES TO YOU, BELLA-LICIOUS ]

December 22, 2025 we welcome 9 month old Belle-Licious to the Mattie's Place rescue family.

Sweet dog, but very fearful & full of anxiety. She also lacked all social skills she needed to productively function in life.

Belle-Licious was originally bought online when she was only 2 months old. The buyer tried hard for 7 months, but did not have the lifestyle a puppy needed to learn and grow and months later was completely overwhelmed and thankfully surrendered Belle-Licious to rescue, so she could get the help she needed most.

Often, the general public condemn rescue's for:

❌ asking to many personal questions
❌ having to difficult of an adoption process
❌ are angered when they're declined for a dog
❌ have too many expectations when adopting

The reason for the above is it's VERY important to ensure dogs are matched to the lifestyle of the adopter. Every day I get surrender requests for people that bought dogs online that are not a match for them or their lifestyle and they need to surrender.

Dogs like Belle-Licious are great examples as to why rescues have a process in place.

Belle-Licious was put on daily medication to help her with her day to day emotional struggles. We enlisted the support of Inked K9 Krew Professional Dog Training & Pet Services for an in-home assessment and training plan for my foster. And with that, Belle-Licious blossomed into a much more confident & calm girly.

Yesterday, Belle-Licious was officially adopted! She will continue the routines we've implemented for her and her new people will work with a professional trainer to keep building on the foundation we set up.

Thank you Silvina & family for fostering another Mattie's Place dog and helping them through a troubled time. I've lost count on how many Mattie's Place dogs you've welcomed into your foster home over the years. I'm grateful and appreciative.

ADOPTION FEE: $875
(they kindly sent $1,000)

MATTIE'S PLACE COST: $1,087
(includes spay, deciduous teeth removal, basic vetting & parasite prevention, medicated support, training, 2 grooms & food with supplies)

[ SOME BUNNY LOVES HIM ]

Born November 6, 2025 through a backyard breeder, Teddy Tots was purchased by his buyer for $850 with 1 round of vaccines & dewormer (often they're false records0.

He was rushed into emergency care February 23, 2026 in respiratory distress. The purchaser had no money for emergency medical care, so humane euthanasia was the decided option, but the clinic was not comfortable euthanizing in this circumstance and sought out rescue support.

Teddy Tots was surrendered to Mattie's Place

He remained hospitalized for the week and was eventually discharged into foster care. Teddy Tots has done really, really well and is a great puppy.

Teddy Tots was a very lucky boy, and had many adoption options.

I choose a young couple, building their life together. Professionals with a work from home Mom that can take Teddy Tots with her on office days. A couple ready to devote time to professional training, which Teddy Tots will really benefit from, being a poodle mix puppy. A couple committed to puppy life and all the hard work that needs to be put in, during the 1st year, to ensure a well rounded adult dog emerges for 2027.

Yesterday, this sweet boy was officially adopted.

Thank you Daniella & Dennis for opening your home to another Mattie's Place dog allowing for a safe place to hang out during the foster period. I appreciate you both so much.

ADOPTION FEE: $875
(they kindly sent $1,000)

MATTIE'S PLACE COST: $6,817
(includes emergency stay, vaccines|dewormer|parasite prevention|neuter in June)

[ SHUT UP WITH HOW CUTE SHE IS! ]

Tiny 2.5 pound, 7 week old Crumpet, a French Bulldog, joined Mattie's Place April 2, after she was surrendered to a vet clinic after the clinic refused to euthanize her.

The backyard breeder that surrendered her wanted her life to end because she wasn't thriving like the other 8 littermates.

Thankfully, Kasia from English Bulldog Rescue of Ontario, called me to see if I could take her on, as they had their own medical case incoming and couldn't take on another.

Crumpet was admitted into emergency care at TVEH. She had a CT Scan & was rushed into surgery being diagnosed with a Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA) - something she was born with. A blood vessel wrapped around her esophagus, preventing swallowing and in turn, regurgitation of her food which equalled no nutrition, emaciation and death without corrective surgery.

Surgery was a success and today she was discharged!

ℹ️ Her bill, as of 4:30 PM today: $11,060 ℹ️
ℹ️ April 2 - current raised: $4,652 ℹ️

I'm waiting for the final copy of the bill as the clinic hadn't finalized it yet when she was discharged this afternoon. I'll post as soon as I have it.

The container is what she's fed in currently, to keep her upright to help her digest, post-op. She is way to tiny for a regular Bailey chair and this works just as easily.

Thank you to everyone cheering Crumpet on and contributing towards her medical care.

A life saved.

Please stop buying dogs from backyard breeders. You may take your little cute puppy home, but others, like Crumpet are culled because your purchase keeps breeders, breeding with zero regard to life.

Thank you Mattie's Place adopters; Dylan & Sara for stepping up to foster Crumpet, beginning today, when she was discharged days before expected.

[ GET ME OUTTA HERE! ]

Tiny 2 pound, 7 week old Crumpet, a French Bulldog, joined Mattie's Place April 2, after she was surrendered to a vet clinic, by her backyard breeder to be euthanized, because she wasn't gaining weight.

She was admitted into emergency care at TVEH and the next day had a CT Scan & was rushed into surgery being diagnosed with a Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA) - something she was born with. It's a blood vessel wrapped around her esophagus, preventing swallowing and in turn, regurgitation of her food.

We expected a hospital stay for a week, post-op, given the surgery and her age & size, but this little pup said, "nope, get me outta here"

24 hours after surgery she was doing great!!! 48 hours after surgery she was doing even better! Today she's doing great and ready to go to her foster home!

She is stable. All her vitals are great. She is eating (upright) and hasn't regurgitated her food since surgery. She is feisty and barking and wanting to play. So her medical team said "OK ... get her outta here"!

⏰ Crumpet is being discharged TODAY.

More to come!

[ TODAY IS SATURDAY, BUT IT'S ALL ABOUT SUNDAY & MONDAY! ]

Today, we welcome 2 beautiful kids to Mattie's Place.

This week, Hank's Haven Rescue Foundation received a distressing message from someone advocating for community puppies, after the Mom was already shot & killed. The puppies were given until today to be picked up or they would share the same fate.

Mattie's Place was happy to welcome 2 pups. 2 joined my friends at Travelling Tails K9 Rescue. And the amazing Hank's Haven Rescue Foundation welcomed 1.

I took the pups to see Dr. C to get their vaccine protocols started, deworming, parasite prevention and over-all health checks.

We're told Mom was a St. Bernard:

😍 SUNDAY | male | 19.5 KG/43 POUNDS
😍 MONDAY | female | 17.4 KG/38.5 POUNDS

Sunday is darker than Monday.

Born January 10, 2026, they are currently 12 weeks old.

They are settling in well in their foster homes.

Watch for their adoption profiles on the website, when they are ready for adoption.

[ Rescue Chat: unfiltered ]

Work & rescue got in the way of filming the podcast this week, so there won't be an episode released until April 17th, but we have some fun conversations upcoming; the founder of a controversial bully rescue shares their story, training tips with my favourite trainers and some breeders join the conversation to give their thoughts on breeding ethics & the Canadian Kennel Club.

👀 Currently, I'm looking for importing rescues | shelters that want to join us in the studio to share their perspective. We're going to dedicate a full episode to discussing importing into Canada (dogs & cats) and the crisis Ontario is facing with pet overpopulation.

[ MATCHA ON THE MOVE ]

Matcha was back at the awesome PawsAbility, yesterday, for some further tweaks to her leg gear.

She’ll be back again next month for another refit.

She will likely require another set made as she’ll presumably outgrow these in the coming months. Adjustments can be made to the current prosthetics, as she grows, until we need to start again with a new set.

In a few months she’ll have surgery to correct her twisted “good” back leg. Hopefully it’s a success and she won’t require a prosthesis on that leg.

By 12 to 18 months old, if all goes well, she’ll have her final prosthetic made for the leg that’s missing the paw.

Mattie's Place will cover the cost of all these prosthetics and her rehab and surgery between now and then, even post-adoption.

It’ll be a long road, but Matcha is really adjusting well already. I’m so proud of her. Truly, truly proud.

Also, so thankful to Anne, her amazing foster Mom!

(still waiting on invoices, so no idea of costs as of this posting 😊 )

[ UPDATE #2 ON FRENCHIE CRUMPET ]

ℹ️ HER HISTORY ℹ️

2 pound, 7 week old, Crumpet joined Mattie's Place yesterday as an emergency intake, after her backyard breeder was content in their decision to euthanize her, the 1 puppy of a large litter of 8, that wasn't thriving.

Instead of using the sale proceeds from the remaining puppies, to pay for Crumpet's surgery, this Easter weekend, taking her life was the better option for her backyard breeder.

ℹ️ YESTERDAY IN RESCUE WITH TVEH ℹ️

Crumpet had a CT Scan this afternoon, that confirmed she had a Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA) - something she was born with. It's a blood vessel wrapped around her esophagus, preventing swallowing and in turn, regurgitation of her food.

From the CT Scan she went directly into surgery, with Dr. Porter supported by other critical care specialists.

She is now in ICU recovery and doing well. The next 72 hours will be so important and we can certainly have a roller coaster ride through this important recovery period.

But for this moment, a life was saved, with thanks to the specialist team at Toronto Veterinary Emergency Hospital - TVEH

ℹ️ TODAY IN RESCUE WITH TVEH ℹ️

Crumpet had a great 1st 24 hours! She was stable and comfortable overnight. They took her off oxygen this morning. She has been fed and has kept her food down without regurgitation. Her chest tube will be removed this afternoon.

ℹ️ MONEY TALK ℹ️

🟢 HER ESTIMATE: $11,335.54 to $16,577.32
🟢 RAISED TO DATE: $2,777.00
(UPDATE: forgot to add e-transfers, now added to total raised)

Thank you to those that sent financial support and cheered her on that are now Team Crumpet!
Mattie's Place is already carrying debt from the past few weeks for:

🟩 Buddy: $4,657
🟩 Omen: $4,481
🟩 Nibbles: $5,528 ($1,012 was raised)
🟩 Phat Tom: $1,147 plus dental next week
🟩 Matcha: $300/week for rehab, plus $500 for 2 specialist consults, plus waiting on her bill for her 2 prosthetics plus replacements before she's 1 year old.

🦺 I know once a dog has received the medical care they need, financial support drops, but Crumpet is facing quite a large emergency bill and if I can't raise these funds, I'll cover it personally, but I'll have to decline further medical cases, until the rescue can pay it back. Unfortunately, I can't carry all the medical debt on top of all the rescue overhead I already fund personally.

ℹ️ WHAT'S NEXT ℹ️

Crumpet will remain hospitalized in ICU and we hope for continued improvement and 🤞 she can go to her foster home end of week!
