Looking for the right home for a very special dog
This is Mocha.
I have known and walked her essentially every day since she was a puppy, and I absolutely adore this dog. If my own circumstances were different, I would take her myself.
Mocha is a young, medium-sized mixed breed. Her DNA results showed Greyhound, Collie, German Shepherd and short-haired Pointer breeds. She is incredibly fast, athletic, intelligent, affectionate and full of personality.
She has also spent a lot of time living in my home, including an extended stay of about a month this summer. During that time she was around multiple dogs, people coming and going, and the normal chaos of my boarding environment. She did extremely well.
Her current owners love her and have put a great deal into her, including professional training, but they have reached the point where they no longer feel they are the right home for a young, very quick and athletic dog like Mocha.
I want to be completely transparent about the difficult part.
Mocha does have a bite history involving both a person and another dog. Anyone seriously interested in her will get the complete history from me. I will not minimize or hide any of it.
At the same time, that is not the dog I experience day to day.
I have handled Mocha for most of her life, around many different dogs and people, and I have not experienced the same behavioural pattern. What I see is a dog who does extremely well with calm, confident, consistent handling and clear expectations.
She is not a dog whose first instinct is to run when she feels frightened, startled or seriously challenged. She tends to stand her ground, and if she reacts, she reacts very quickly. For that reason, I am looking for an experienced and confident dog person, not simply someone willing to take her.
She has grown up closely bonded with another dog, so changing homes will be an adjustment. She has also already shown that she can spend long periods away from home, settle into another household and live successfully with other dogs.
Ideally, I would love to find her a home reasonably close to North York, Yorkdale mall or Etobicoke. If that happens, I would be more than happy to continue walking her. She has been part of my daily life since she was a puppy, and I would very much like to remain part of hers.
This is not an emergency placement and I am not looking for the first available home. I want the right home.
