This is a common misconception — but corn is not just a filler.

When properly processed, corn can be:
✔ A digestible source of energy (carbohydrates)
✔ A source of essential fatty acids
✔ A contributor of protein, fibre, and nutrients

Corn is included in many complete and balanced diets because it helps provide nutrition — not because it’s “empty” or low quality.

What matters most is the overall formulation of the diet, not a single ingredient.

🐢🌎 World Turtle Day 🌎🐢

We may not see them as patients in our clinic, but turtles play a vital role in our ecosystems. They help maintain balance in wetlands and waterways and are important indicators of environmental health — even if they often go unnoticed.

If you encounter an injured or at-risk wild turtle in Toronto, please contact:
• Toronto Wildlife Centre: https://www.torontowildlifecentre.com
• Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre: https://ontarioturtle.ca

Let’s do our part to protect these important but often unseen members of our ecosystem 💚

Ticks are tiny but pesky parasites that feed on blood and it’s only when they’re fully fed that they become easily felt or seen. Despite their tiny size, they can be a big problem because they carry multiple debilitating diseases (including Lyme disease) that are harmful to pets. https://pbxx.it/05dV8H

Did you know a microchip is one of the most effective ways to help reunite lost pets with their families?

A microchip:
• Is about the size of a grain of rice
• Is implanted under the skin (quick, routine procedure)
• Contains a unique ID linked to your contact information
• Lasts for your pet’s lifetime

Important facts:
• Collars and tags can fall off — microchips can’t
• Microchipped pets are significantly more likely to be returned home
• Registration and keeping your contact info up to date is essential

This is a common myth — but not true.

Dogs (and many cats in appropriately formulated diets) can digest grains, and they can be a useful source of energy and nutrients.

✔ Grains like rice, oats, and barley are highly digestible
✔ They provide carbohydrates, fibre, and essential nutrients
✔ They are included in many complete and balanced diets

Food allergies to grains are actually uncommon in pets. When sensitivities do occur, they are more often related to proteins like beef or chicken.
