One of the things that I love about Straightness Training is that it can be done with any type of horse, and pretty much any age. The exercises are gentle and progress at whatever pace the horse needs.

This is my horse, Frugal Lady. She is in her early 30s, and I noticed that her neck muscles were hard and she is starting to lose topline muscle. So, we have started doing Straightness Training to help her be more supple so she will feel good. After just a month or so of doing the exercises for about 20 minutes at a time, a couple of times a week, I can already see a difference. Plus, it's a great bonding activity!

Being a senior citizen myself, I definitely see the advantage of doing exercises to stay flexible and strong 🙂

Is your horse more difficult one way than the other? Is your horse stiff, on the forehand, resistant? Are you looking for ways to improve your relationship? I started Straightness Training a few years ago, and I spent the past year training with Marijke de Jong to become certified as a Straightness Training instructor. I am excited to share this excellent program. Starting with groundwork, through a progressive series of exercises, you can improve your horse's suppleness, balance, and willingness. Interested in learning more? Contact me to set up a complimentary zoom call for an introductory session on how Straightness Training can help you and your horse.

Is your horse difficult to motivate?

My horse, Hank, has been very difficult to figure out. This video was from a few months ago. We have made considerable progress since. But still a ways to go! He learns reasonably easily, goes through the motions of what I ask him to do, but shows very little enthusiasm. Drives me a bit crazy! Is he bored? Is he scared? Does he have trouble understanding?

To get some answers so that I can understand him better, I use a combination of telepathic animal communication, reading his body language and good horsemanship practices. Still a work in progress, but I definitely feel that we are getting somewhere.

I could just do my training and not worry about what he is feeling. But, that's not at all what I want to do. There are 2 of us in this relationship 🙂🙂

Interested in animal communication?

I was introduced to animal communication about 15 years ago. I admit that I was skeptical at first. But, I decided to find out more about it and bought books, took courses, attended workshops, and pretty much did all I could to learn about it.

Animal communication opened up a whole new world to me and completely changed my relationships with animals.

Licking and chewing. There is a variety of ideas on why horses lick and chew during riding and training. However, there is scientific evidence that horses do this as a release following a stressful situation. So, it is a sign that the horse encountered a stressful situation and is then able to release the tension. Good news and bad news. Unfortunately, horses are easily stressed during our activities with them. It is inevitable that stress will occur, but we need to be mindful of how the horse is feeling and do our best to minimize the stress.

Hank doesn't like fly spray. He tolerates it, but the fact that he is licking and chewing and showing a couple of other signs, I know that he is stressed by the activity.

Food for thought?

I love watching my horses and donkeys getting along. Of course, there are occasional skirmishes, but when they eat together without fighting over food, it's so heartwarming💕💕
