Your home. Your routine. Your life. It all matters.

I once worked with a family raising two kids under five. Their days were full of nap times, snack times, and unplanned chaos. A generic training plan would have set them up to fail. So we built one that worked with their reality — short sessions, flexible timing, and consistency that fit their life instead of fighting it.

A training plan that ignores your day-to-day reality is a plan that's set up to fail. If you have kids, a small apartment, a busy schedule — your dog's training has to work inside that life, not around it.

The "S" in my R.O.O.T.S.™ Method means I build every plan around your real surroundings, not a fantasy version of your household.

That's how training actually holds up.

This wraps the R.O.O.T.S.™ series — Relationship, Observation, Origins, Temperament, Surroundings. If any of this sounds like what you and your pup need, I offer free 15-minute consults. Link in bio.

Some dogs are bold. Some are cautious. Some need five minutes to warm up, others are ready to go the second you walk in.

I once trained two puppies from the same litter, in the same household. One thrived on confidence-building games. The other needed a slower, calmer approach just to feel settled. Same goal — completely different roadmap.

Training a confident dog and training a nervous one are not the same job — even if the goal looks similar on paper.

The "T" in my R.O.O.T.S.™ Method means every plan is built around the dog in front of me, not a template.

That's the difference between training that sticks and training that doesn't.

Where your dog came from shapes who they are today.

A puppy from a breeder, a rescue with an unknown history, a dog who's had multiple homes — they all walk into training with a different starting point.

I once worked with a rescue who'd already been through three homes before finding his family. We didn't start with commands. We started with trust — small, consistent wins that showed him this home was different.

I never use a one-size-fits-all plan, because no two dogs have the same origin story.

Understanding where a dog came from is part of the "O" in my R.O.O.T.S.™ Method — and it changes everything about how I approach their training.

Every dog is telling you something. We just have to learn to listen.

The barking, the nipping, the pulling on leash — none of it happens for no reason. It's communication.

I once worked with a dog who barked at every visitor. On the surface, it looked like aggression. But after watching him closely, I saw the real story — fear, rooted in too much time spent alone as a puppy. Once I saw that, the whole training plan changed.

Before I ever build a plan, I spend time observing. Watching how a dog moves, reacts, and responds to their environment tells me more than any checklist ever could.

This is the "O" in my R.O.O.T.S.™ Method — Observation before action.

What is your dog trying to tell you?

Had one of those "aha" moments with a client this week that I have to share. 🐶

She came to me thinking her dog was just stubborn — wouldn't settle, whined constantly, barely reacted when she left the room. Classic "doesn't listen" story, right?

Turns out his food bowl was out all day, every day. Help-yourself buffet, 24/7.

We tried something small: put the food down for 5 minutes, twice a day, then pick it up. That's it. No punishment, nothing complicated.

By day three, this dog was a completely different animal. Watching her. Waiting by the kitchen. Making eye contact before mealtime — something he'd genuinely never done before.

Here's what my client realized, and it kind of floored her: her dog wasn't ignoring her out of stubbornness. He simply had no reason to look to her for anything. The second there was a little structure, he had a reason to connect.

This is exactly what I mean when I talk about the Relationship pillar of my training approach — trust isn't built by giving a dog constant, unconditional access to everything. It's built in small, predictable moments where they learn they can count on you, and that you're paying attention to them too.

Anyone else have a "free feeder" at home? Curious if you've noticed the same thing — I'd love to hear your experience in the comments. 👇

The honest answer is a framework I call R.O.O.T.S. — it's the lens I use with every single dog and family I work with, and I built it after years of getting it wrong with my own dog, Bear. I was told to "be the boss," use dominance, make him listen. It didn't just fail — it made him more anxious and pulled us further apart, until I finally realized he wasn't giving me a hard time. He was having one.
Here's what ROOTS stands for:
🐾 R — Relationship: Trust comes before obedience. A dog who feels connected to you wants to work with you.
🐾 O — Observation: Your dog is talking to you all the time — tail, ears, breathing. We learn to read it.
🐾 O — Origins: Every dog carries their breed history and instincts. We work with that nature, not against it.
🐾 T — Temperament: Confident, cautious, or somewhere in between — training gets customized to who your dog actually is.
🐾 S — Surroundings: We set up your home and routines so good behaviour is easy, not a constant uphill battle.
No fear. No intimidation. Just a framework that gets to the why behind the behaviour, not just the behaviour itself.
If this resonates, follow along — I'll be breaking down each pillar over the next few weeks with real client stories (starting with a food trick that taught one of my clients her dog didn't trust her yet 👀).
