Throughout the month, we’re raising funds for the Farley Foundation, which helps Ontario pet owners and families who are struggling financially to afford essential veterinary care for their pets. The Farley Foundation helps subsidize veterinary care for eligible Ontario pet owners and families in need. 🐶🐱

Here’s how you can support Fundraise for Farley at TIAH this month: ✨

A look back at Death & Doughnuts. 🤍🍩

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Toronto Integrative Animal Health for an open, gentle conversation about end of life care for companion animals. 🐾

Death & Doughnuts brought together clients, neighbours and local professionals to talk honestly about end of life care, including planning ahead, quality of life decisions, care, memorial and aftercare options. 🤍

We’re so grateful to everyone who shared their time, knowledge, questions and stories with us. ❤️

Questions were asked. Stories were shared. We hope everyone left a little lighter. ✨

We captured so many meaningful moments and conversations throughout the afternoon, and we’ll be sharing more from the event in the weeks ahead. Virtual appointments to discuss end of life care with our team are available. 🐾

Today, on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour the survivors of residential schools, their families, and the children who never returned home. 🧡

We take this day to reflect on the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools, and to recognize the importance of listening, learning and continuing the work of reconciliation. 🧡

Not just today, but throughout the year, we encourage our community to take time to learn, reflect and honour the experiences and voices of Indigenous Peoples. Our team is wearing orange today in solidarity, and we’re making a donation to the Anishnawbe Health Foundation. 🧡

Turns out, integrative veterinary medicine is kinda chic! 💚🐾

That also means continuing to adapt care as pets age and offering a full range of therapeutic and diagnostic services by blending Western medicine with holistic approaches to treatment. 🌿🩺

Periodontal disease 🦷 isn’t just a senior dog problem. Small breed dogs can develop periodontal disease much earlier than many pet parents realize.

A large study of more than 3 million veterinary records found that extra small dogs were up to five times more likely to be diagnosed with periodontal disease than giant breed dogs. 🐶🪥

For small dogs, dental care should begin early. Once the adult teeth have come in, your veterinary team can assess for concerns such as retained baby teeth and crowding that may affect periodontal health. 🦷

Daily brushing and the use of appropriate dental home care products can play an important role in protecting oral health. Depending on your dog’s genetics and how effectively dental home care can be performed, professional COHATs, Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatments, may also be recommended earlier and more frequently than in larger dogs. 💚

Have a small breed dog? Ask us about their dental health and when their first COHAT may be appropriate. 🐾

Canine Rehabilitation Services Return This Month! 🐾

We’re excited to welcome Nicki Cunningham back to Toronto Integrative Animal Health beginning Wednesday, September 16! 🐶💚 Nicki will be offering evening appointments at the hospital every other Wednesday.

Nicki provides Canine Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation services to help pets improve mobility, recover from injury or surgery, manage chronic orthopedic conditions, and maintain strength and function throughout all stages of life. 🦴✨

Whether your pet is recovering from a procedure, dealing with arthritis, or could benefit from a personalized rehabilitation program, Nicki’s expertise can play an important role in their recovery and long term wellness. 🤍🐾

If you’re interested in learning more or would like to schedule an appointment, please contact our team and we’d be happy to help determine if rehabilitation therapy is right for your pet. 📞💚

In most cases, we will live longer than our beloved fur family members, and have to make decisions about their end of life care. 🤍🐾

Join us for Death & Doughnuts, a community conversation event designed to create a safe, welcoming space to talk about one of the most difficult parts of pet ownership: end of life care. 🍩☕

This event is open to all and will feature local professionals who can answer questions and provide guidance on topics including palliative and hospice care, quality of life evaluation, end of life planning, in home nursing care, euthanasia, pet body aftercare and memorial services, and pet loss grief counselling.

Whether you’re currently facing these decisions, have experienced a loss in the past, or simply want to learn more before the time comes, we invite you to stop by, enjoy a coffee and a doughnut, and have open, supportive conversations. 💚

Our goal is to help remove the stigma, fear and anxiety surrounding these important discussions.
