A study from Texas A&M University analyzed more than 43,000 dogs and found that at least 84% of them show signs of anxiety or fear in their daily lives.
The most common triggers are unfamiliar people, other dogs, loud noises, and new situations. Signs include whining, trembling, hiding, freezing, or trying to escape.
Some signs are more subtle: tail tucked between the legs, avoiding eye contact, or reacting negatively to unfamiliar objects. Bathing and nail trimming were excluded from the data, so the 84% does not include expected grooming situations.
Veterinarian Bonnie Beaver warns that ongoing anxiety can turn into aggression. Early recognition makes a difference.
The problem is not that the dog is “fearful,” but that most owners don’t know how to identify the signs. An anxious animal suffers in silence every day.
If your dog reacts poorly to noises, visitors, or walks, it may be worth speaking with a veterinary behavior specialist.
