It’s Summer! Not just the season, but also the name of this lovely pup. She’s an 8 month old lab that’s eager to please, though a bit too distracted outside. Her parents signed her up for my 8 week obedience course and they’re already doing fantastic after their first lesson! 🐶

Artemis has never been muzzled nor needed to be muzzled, but I really believe all dogs should be conditioned to wear a muzzle. Even if your dog is the sweetest, most well-behaved dog that doesn’t eat anything off the ground, there may be a time where they have to be muzzled in an emergency. If your dog is already conditioned to wear a muzzle, they won’t have that added stress in an already stressful situation. I’m not a trainer that relies on or uses a lot of treats, but when it comes to something like this, building that positive association with whatever is the highest reward for your dog is key. Artemis finds small training treats high enough value, but all dogs are different. You can substitute for praise and pets or a toy if your dog finds those higher value than food. This process takes a few weeks. I spent a minimum of 3-4 days on each step with more time spent on the later steps. If needed, I always returned to a previous step for a couple days if Artemis showed discomfort. Eventually, you should be able to just say “muzzle” and the dog will put their nose into the muzzle on their own. I’m using a relatively breathable, adjustable fabric muzzle. I never plan on working Artemis with this muzzle, just have her conditioned in case of emergency. If you do plan on or need to work/exercise your dog with a muzzle, use a basket type muzzle with enough room for your dog to open their mouth and pant.

Part 2 of teaching ecollar: the “Place” command. This is how we start associating the ecollar with commands. Once place is mastered where the dog understands that anything can be place, you can introduce other (already known) commands with the ecollar. To start with place, we use an elevated platform of some sort that is large enough for the dog to lie down on. You can build or buy a special platform, but I often just use an elevated bed. Eventually we add more platforms platform, smaller platforms, and no elevation.

It took Bodie a bit longer to understand place than the first lesson, but he got there in the end! (And will continue to improve as his owner continues practicing - these lessons are only an hour long and every dog learns at their own pace)

Had the absolute pleasure of working with Bodie the Bernese Mountain Dog. His owner wanted to learn how to use the e-collar & like any good dog owner should do, sought the help of a professional to teach her and introduce it correctly. I teach the ecollar in 2 parts, this is part 1.

Part 1 we find the dog’s working level and using the “nick” function (like a tap/poke, not the constant) teach them to stay within about a 1-2 ft radius of the handler. We start with the dog on leash to help guide them, but by the end of the hour, Bodie was completely off leash!

Bodie is using Dogtra 1900S

There are so many reasons why I teach dogs to walk on a loose leash at the heel (NOT a focused heel), but one reason that’s currently very important in my life is having to push my baby’s stroller. Walking in this position means I don’t have to worry about the dog potentially being bumped into or having their feet run over by the stroller, the leash getting tangled in the wheels, or the possibility of the stroller getting knocked over. If I want to give the dog more freedom to roam further away, I go somewhere I can let them off leash or park the stroller and have the dog on a long line (for dogs not ready for off leash freedom).

Does your dog bolt out open doors ahead of you? Start by practicing in doorways inside your home first. Avoid potential issues - or worse, tragedy - by teaching your dog to remain in a sit while the door opens until you give them the ok to go through

If your dog has a bombproof stay or place, life is so much easier. You can have company over for dinner and not worry about the dog jumping all over everyone and begging for food. A contractor (service provider, repair person, etc) can come to your house and not have a dog all up in their business. You can go camping and sit by the campfire and your dog can relax with you.
If you want this, DM for info on lessons 😊
