Many of the most bioavailable sources of essential nutrients for pets are found in species-appropriate whole foods.

Organ meats, seafood, and other nutrient-dense ingredients provide vitamins and trace minerals in forms that are easily absorbed and used by the body.

Incorporating a variety of these foods into a fresh-feeding diet can help support overall health, from skin and coat to immune function and energy levels.

Rotating ingredients and including a broad spectrum of nutrients ensures that pets receive balanced and complete nutrition over time.

What nutrient-rich foods do you like to add to your pet’s bow?

As we move into a new year, it is easy to feel pressure to overhaul everything.

But when it comes to our pets’ health, small, mindful shifts are often more supportive and more sustainable than sudden dramatic changes.

These are a few principles I come back to again and again in practice.

Paying closer attention to ingredient labels helps move the focus away from marketing claims and toward what is actually in the bowl. Sourcing, processing, and ingredient quality matter more than what is trending.

Prioritizing quality over popularity is another important piece. Just because a supplement, medication or diet is trending on social media does not mean it is the right fit for every pet.

Incorporating fresh foods into the diet, where appropriate, can be a meaningful way to provide more species appropriate nutrition, even on a budget. This is not about perfection or replacement, it’s about intention.

Taking a long term view of health matters. Most chronic issues do not develop overnight, and meaningful support rarely comes from quick fixes. Consistency over time is often the bigger piece.

Reducing unnecessary environmental exposures where possible, is another subtle but impactful shift. Simple considerations like water quality, food storage containers and everyday household products can quietly influence overall health.

Finally, slowing down when introducing changes and keeping routines simple helps the body adapt more comfortably and increases the likelihood that those changes will stick.

What small shifts are you focusing on for your pet’s health this year?

✨ Exciting news! Our very first Pop-Up Holistic Wellness Clinics are coming February 2026! ✨

These in-person clinics offer a 1-hour comprehensive consultation and examination, giving you the time and space to dive deep into your pet’s health, nutrition, and overall wellness. You can also add-on services like blood profiles and titre testing to support your pet’s health.

Please note: We cannot currently send titres to Kansas State, so pricing will differ if processed through IDEXX laboratories. The pop up clinics are NOT titre clinics, we are unable to run blood samples as a stand alone service for these appointments, all new patients legally must have a consultation done prior to having any laboratory testing and interpretation completed.

Our first round of pop-ups will be at:
1️⃣ ADR Pet Stores, Markham – canine consultations only
2️⃣ Pet Pal Care, Etobicoke – appointments for both dogs and cats

More details coming soon! 🐾 Tag a pet parent who might benefit and hit the notifications button so you’re alerted as soon as bookings open.

You have likely heard that feeding kibble helps clean your pet’s teeth. While texture may play a small role, the composition of the diet is the primary factor in maintaining a healthy oral environment.

Did you know that what you feed your dog or cat can actually change the microbiome in their mouth?

The oral microbiome is the community of bacteria living in the mouth, and research in humans shows that diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates reduce microbial diversity and increase populations of bacteria linked to dysbiosis and dental disease.

Studies in pets suggest that diet also influences oral bacterial populations, with different types of food altering bacterial composition and saliva chemistry.

Proper nutrition is fundamental for oral health in both humans and pets, and focusing on species-appropriate diets, along with added oral health support such as chewing on raw meaty bones or brushing the teeth, is far more effective than feeding highly processed, inflammatory foods that are known to cause chronic health issues when fed long term.

When we talk about “detox,” it’s easy for the conversation to drift toward cleanses or quick fixes. In reality, detoxification is a continuous physiologic process that occurs every day through multiple interconnected systems.

In dogs and cats, metabolic waste and inflammatory byproducts are managed not only by the liver and kidneys, but also through the skin, immune system, and lymphatic circulation. When one pathway becomes overloaded, others often compensate — which is why chronic skin and inflammatory conditions are frequently part of a larger picture.

Supporting detox pathways is not about forcing elimination. It’s about maintaining normal physiology through appropriate nutrition, hydration, movement, and minimizing unnecessary inflammatory or chemical burden.

I am curious to know if you have used lymphatic massage for yourself or your pets. Let me know in the comments!

This post is intended for education only and not as a substitute for individualized veterinary care.

Your pet’s liver and kidneys work quietly in the background every single day, filtering waste, breaking down chemicals, managing inflammation, and keeping the whole body in balance.

And while these organs are incredibly resilient, they’re also deeply sensitive to things we can control: the quality of food, the amount of moisture in the diet, the chemical load in the home, and the nutrients available to power their detox pathways.

Today’s pets face far more environmental and chemical exposures than their bodies were originally designed for—so giving their detox organs a little extra support can make a meaningful difference over time.

Simple things go a long way: moisture-rich meals, clean water, fewer unnecessary chemicals, and thoughtfully chosen herbs or nutrients when appropriate. Over time, these quiet choices make a visible difference in energy, skin, digestion, and overall vitality.

If you aren’t able to incorporate the changes listed throughout the whole year, focus on times when the toxic burden is the highest (eg. Leading up to and after vaccines, after administrating tick/flea medications, anytime conventional drugs that affect the liver/kidneys are used etc). Every little bit counts!

Let me know if you like this post and I will make part 2 - how to support the lymphatic and skin detox pathways!

I’m sure you’ve heard it before “garlic is poisonous for dogs!!!”

That warning comes from a single study done in 2000, but a deeper dive into the methodology tells us a different story.

The dogs in the study were given 1.25 mL of concentrated garlic extract per kg of body weight every day, which is equivalent to roughly 12–15 cloves of garlic per 10–12 kg dog each day.

Even at this extreme dose:
✔ The dogs did not develop clinical anemia
✔ Only mild microscopic changes (Heinz bodies and eccentrocytes) were seen

So does that mean garlic is always safe? Not at all. Toxicity depends on multiple factors:

✔ Dose — small vs. very high amounts
✔ Form — fresh cloves, powder, or concentrated extract
✔ Frequency — occasional vs. daily
✔ Individual dog — genetics, health status, and red blood cell sensitivity (high risk breeds)

The dose makes the poison.
