If you have a baby coming you need to read this!

FOALING AND IgG TESTING (Immunoglobulin test)

JUST DO IT! (and at the right time)

Colostrum (foals first milk) is very important because it is rich in antibodies, protein and calories. The mare transfers her antibodies to the foal primarily through the colostrum. These antibodies protect the foal against environmental diseases.

These antibody proteins are also called immunoglobulins or “IgG”. They are very large in size.
The foal’s small intestine will only absorb these large proteins during the first 12-24 hours after birth. After 24 hours, the only way a foal can absorb more immunoglobulins is by a plasma (intravenous) transfusion. It is recommended that a foalingvattendant or veterinarian check the foal’s IgG levels within the first 12-16 hours after birth.

Doing a blood test to check the IgG levels of the foal is what I refer to as cheap insurance!!

At this early stage we have a few resources we can use from supplementing colostrum, plasma and or medications to help the foal develop and grow without succumbing to environmental factors it normally would not be able to fight off.

The biggest thing I like about having an IgG done (besides sleep and a sigh of relief) is that if the young foals do have any issues that show up days later we can know with certainty that we started out with great IgG levels. This helps us be able to effectively diagnose and treat the the foal.

There are a few ways to test, one is a super quick snap test that can be done on site the other requires blood to be sent back to the clinic but can be more accurate. Chat with your foaling attendant or Veterinarian ahead of time so they can inform you of their chosen method of testing and time frame they prefer.

There are some incredible horses trotting around because proactive measures were taken even when the birth itself looked routine.
