Ghillie One Month Board & Train Update!

Mr. Ghillie is officially one month into his two-month Board & Train Obedience Program with us, and this sweet little guy continues to impress us!

For being just about seven months old, Ghillie is doing absolutely amazing. He is such a sweet, willing young dog and has been a pleasure to work with.

So far, Ghillie has developed a very good understanding of PLACE, and his SIT and DOWN are nearly perfect. His long sit stays and down stays are coming along beautifully as well. He is consistently holding them for well over two minutes, and we’re quickly closing in on the three-minute mark! His recall continues to improve every day.

One area where Ghillie has really excelled is his leash work. His loose leash walking and ability to walk nicely at HEEL are exactly what most people strive for when walking their dog. He is calm, attentive and understands exactly where he needs to be.

Over the next month, we’ll continue building on everything Ghillie has learned while finishing up his e-collar conditioning, as requested by his owners. From there, we’ll begin transitioning his obedience to off leash work.

Our goal is for Gilly to confidently perform everything he has learned without relying on a leash — walking at heel, going to place, holding his sit and down stays, and most importantly, developing an extremely reliable off-leash recall.

We’ll also begin increasing the level of distraction around him. That means working around other dogs, people, animals, vehicles coming and going, and all the everyday activity that can challenge a young dog’s focus.

The first month has been all about building the foundation. Now we get to take that foundation and really put it to work!

We are incredibly happy with where Gilly is at halfway through his program and can’t wait to see how much more this sweet boy accomplishes over the next month.

Meet Bella!

Bella has officially joined us here at Oak Lane for our two month Board & Train Obedience Program!

She arrived this past Thursday, October 1st, and will be spending the next two months with us before heading home at the beginning of December.

Bella is a sweet Border Collie cross who has come to work on her overall manners and obedience, with some of our main focuses being loose leash walking, heeling, and recall.

So far, Bella has been an absolute sweetheart and is settling into life here with us wonderfully. We’re excited to see how much progress she makes over the next couple of months!

We can’t wait to watch her confidence and skills grow and eventually send her home to her owners at the beginning of December with a whole new set of skills under her belt.

Fall is definitely upon us here at Oak Lane!

With the evenings getting cooler and that unmistakable fall chill starting to settle in, we’ve spent the past few days around the kennel getting things ready for…..dare I say it ??? winter!

There are always those last-minute jobs to finish up before the snow flies, and one of the big ones on our list is making sure we have plenty of winter bedding stocked up for our crew.

We use oat straw for bedding in our kennels, so the girls (Dakota, Lindsay, Paisley, Frankie , and I) have been busy picking up bales straight out of the field, hauling them home and stacking them away in our bale shed. Keeping it stored clean and dry means we’ll have lots on hand to keep the doghouses filled with warm, cozy bedding throughout those cold Saskatchewan winter months.

Of course, kennel life doesn’t stop while the winter prep is happening! In between hauling and stacking bales, we’ve still been busy working with the few board-and-train obedience dogs we currently have on site.

And unfortunately, as much as we’d probably rather be out taking advantage of bird season, this is one of those jobs that trumps being able to go hunting! Especially when the weather is nice and dry. There will be time for birds later!! getting everyone ready and comfortable for winter has to come first.

Training dogs, hauling bales, finishing projects and getting everything tucked away before Mother Nature decides winter is officially here.

With the last couple of weeks being absolutely beautiful, and farmers finally getting the crops off, the geese and ducks have been pouring into Saskatchewan in masses and hunting season is in full swing!

For us, one of the best parts of this time of year is getting to see all that summer training finally come together.

Over the past few weeks, many of the dogs that spent their summer with us in our Board & Train Gundog Program have finally had the chance to hit the field with their owners and put everything they learned to work. After months of obedience, retrieving drills, land and water work, steadiness, handling, and learning the ropes of becoming a great gun dog, they’re finally getting to pick up those first warm birds.

And the pictures have been rolling in!

There is something pretty special about seeing a young dog go from learning the basics here at Oak Lane to sitting in a blind or working a field beside their owner and doing exactly what they spent the summer preparing for.

We couldn’t be happier with the reports we’re getting back or more proud of these dogs and the work they put in this summer.

This is what all those long summer training days are for. Now it’s their time to hunt!

Mr. Gilly is certainly making the most of his time with us!

Gilly has been here for just over two weeks now as part of our two-month Board & Train Obedience Program, and he is doing fantastic!

He is completely settled into the routine and absolutely loves coming out to work with us every day. Gilly already has a great grasp on SIT, DOWN and PLACE, and he is really starting to put everything together.

Our loose-leash HEEL is coming along very nicely, and his recall and returning into heel position are getting stronger every day. He’s becoming much more focused and responsive to his handler, and you can really see his confidence growing as he figures out exactly what we’re asking of him.

At just over two weeks into an eight-week program, we still have lots of time ahead of us. As Gilly’s foundation becomes more solid, we’ll continue increasing distractions, duration and distance and begin asking him to perform these same skills in more challenging situations.

The goal isn’t simply to teach a dog a list of commands. It’s to build reliable obedience that carries over into everyday life walking nicely on leash, coming when called, settling on place, waiting patiently, listening around distractions and ultimately becoming a dog that is enjoyable to take anywhere.

MEET GILLY — AND CHECK OUT OUR UPCOMING BOARD & TRAIN OPENINGS!

Meet Gilly, one of the newest dogs to join us for our two-month Board & Train Obedience Program!

Gilly is actually one of our own—he is from our March 2026 litter between Red and Mabel. He is owned by the MacInnis family.

At just over six months old, he is at a fantastic age to start building the obedience, manners and confidence that will help shape the dog he becomes as an adult.

For the next two months, Gilly will be learning that good obedience goes far beyond simply knowing how to sit.

Our goal is to develop a dog you can truly enjoy living with.

A dog you can walk without being dragged down the road. A dog who comes when called. A dog who can settle on place when you have company. A dog who waits instead of charging through an open door or jumping out of the vehicle. And a dog who understands what is expected of them both at home and out in the real world.

Throughout his stay, Gilly will work on:

Sit, Down, Stay & Wait
Place
Recall/Here
Loose-leash walking & Heel
On- and off-leash obedience
Doorway and gate manners
Calmly entering and exiting vehicles
Kennel manners
Impulse control
Socialization, confidence and everyday manners

Our Prairie Storm Merlin 2nd WCX SH and Oak Lane’s Willa Mean A WC JH (Merlin × Willa) chocolate puppies are already six weeks old! This fantastic litter of 11 4 females and 7 males continues to amaze us.
Willa has proven to be such an incredible mother. All 11 puppies have thrived, and they have stayed remarkably consistent in size throughout these first six weeks. Right now, there is only about a two-ounce difference between the largest and smallest puppy, which is pretty incredible for a litter this size!
Over the past week or so, these pups have really started to come into their own. They’re spending a significant amount of time each day outside in their large exercise area, taking in all the different sights, sounds, smells, and activity around them.
When we take them out to explore, they are curious, confident little puppies who love checking out new places and, most of all, being with people. They absolutely love being picked up, cuddled, petted, and included in whatever we’re doing.
This week, the fun really started! We began introducing them to duck, pheasant, and grouse wings, along with rolling balls, small puppy bumpers, and paint rollers for them to chase, carry, and retrieve. Every single puppy has been eager to investigate and participate. They’re doing exactly what we hope to see from six week old Labrador puppies having fun, learning to use their noses, picking things up, exploring, and building confidence.
It’s hard to believe that we only have two short weeks left with these little ones before they begin heading off to their new families. Those two weeks are going to fly by, and we plan to make the most of them by continuing to expose these puppies to as many positive experiences as possible before they leave us.
We’re so excited to watch these 11 puppies continue to develop. Whether their futures include being a much-loved family companion, an active adventure partner, a hunting companion or a combination of all three we think there are some pretty special dogs in this litter.
The next two weeks are going to be a lot of fun!

It’s time for that yearly picture of our Board & Train Gun Dog crew the one we attempt to take every year!
Getting 14 gun dogs to sit, stay, look in roughly the same direction, and cooperate long enough to get a picture is always an adventure, but somehow we manage!
This year’s picture feels a little bittersweet because today our first dog heads home, marking the beginning of the end of another incredible summer with this crew.
11 of these dogs have been with us since the end of April, working through our Board & Train Gun Dog Program, while four joined us at the beginning of July for a tune-up before hunting season.
What a summer it has been.
These dogs have worked hard, learned an incredible amount, and grown so much over the past few months. We’ve watched their confidence build, their skills develop, and all those individual pieces of training start coming together.
Will their first hunting season be perfect? Probably not—and that’s okay. There will be stumbles, new situations, exciting birds, missed retrieves and moments when things don’t go exactly according to plan. But every one of these dogs is heading into hunting season with a solid foundation and the tools they need to work through whatever gets thrown at them.
Now comes one of the best parts for us—waiting for those pictures from their owners!
There really isn’t much better than getting a picture of one of these dogs in the field with their first duck, goose, grouse or pheasant. Those pictures make all the early mornings, long days, wet clothes, muddy boots and countless retrieves worth it.

Meet Luke & Boone!
Our two handsome boys from Spike × Asker are now 12 weeks old, and these two just keep getting more fun!
Luke and Boone are happy, outgoing little Springers who absolutely love being outside, exploring the tall grass, using their noses and, of course, carrying something whenever they get the chance.
We’ve also been having lots of fun introducing them to puppy training. Both boys are working on sit, place, wait and name recognition, along with being introduced to bumpers, wings and feathers. Their natural retrieving instincts have been so much fun to watch develop!
They have that wonderful field-bred Springer combination we love — enthusiastic, curious and adventurous outside, while being affectionate and people-oriented.
Luke and Boone have also now received their first and second vaccinations and continue to get lots of individual attention, training and exposure while they are here with us.
We think these two little guys are pretty special, and we’re really enjoying watching their personalities develop.
