🦃 BEFORE YOU SHARE YOUR THANKSGIVING DINNER…

Those pleading eyes can be convincing, but many holiday favourites aren’t safe choices for dogs.

Keep these off your dog’s plate:

🚫 Cooked turkey bones
🚫 Turkey skin, gravy and other rich or fatty foods
🚫 Stuffing or dishes containing onion, garlic, chives or leeks
🚫 Grapes, raisins and currants
🚫 Chocolate and anything containing xylitol
🚫 Alcohol and raw yeast dough
🚫 Corn cobs, cooking string, foil and food-filled garbage

Want to include your dog safely? Offer a small amount of plain, fully cooked, boneless turkey without skin or seasoning—or stick with their usual treats and food.

Remember that guests and children may not know your dog’s rules. Ask everyone not to feed from the table, clear unattended plates quickly and secure the garbage before your favourite scavenger finds it.

If your dog eats something potentially toxic or swallows a bone, corn cob, string or other object, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service promptly. Don’t wait for symptoms and don’t induce vomiting unless directed by a veterinary professional.

Meet the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever!

As Canada heads into Thanksgiving weekend, we’re celebrating one of our homegrown breeds—the bright, athletic and unmistakably red Toller. 🍁

Developed in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, during the early 19th century, the Toller was originally known as the Little River Duck Dog.

But what does “tolling” actually mean?

These clever dogs would play and move along the shoreline, using their lively actions and waving tails to attract curious waterfowl closer to shore. Once the birds were within range, the dog would retrieve them from the water.

Tollers are:

🐾 The smallest of the retrievers
🐾 Intelligent and eager to learn
🐾 Affectionate with their families
🐾 Athletic, energetic and driven
🐾 Easily recognized by their red or orange coat and often-white markings

And then there’s the famous “Toller scream”—a piercing sound of excitement that can make an unsuspecting person wonder whether something terrible has happened. Toller people know. 😂

These dogs may be compact, but they need plenty of physical activity, mental stimulation and meaningful things to do. They’re often happiest with active people who enjoy training, outdoor adventures and dog sports.

⚠️ TIP TUESDAY: ANTIFREEZE IS AN EMERGENCY

As temperatures drop and vehicles, cabins and RVs are prepared for winter, antifreeze becomes a serious seasonal danger.

Antifreeze containing ethylene glycol is highly toxic. Even a small exposure can cause severe kidney damage and may be fatal if treatment is delayed.

Early signs can look like intoxication:

🐾 Stumbling or poor coordination
🐾 Vomiting or drooling
🐾 Unusual sleepiness
🐾 Increased thirst or urination
🐾 Tremors or seizures

A dog may appear to improve after the first stage—but serious internal damage can still be developing.

If you suspect antifreeze exposure:

🚨 Contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately
🚨 Do not wait for symptoms
🚨 Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless directed by a veterinary professional
🚨 Bring the product container or a clear photo of its label, if available. Many newer antifreeze products are pet safe. But not all of them. Don't risk it.

Help prevent exposure by cleaning spills immediately, checking beneath vehicles for leaks, storing containers securely and keeping dogs away from unknown puddles, garages and winterized cabin or RV plumbing.

This is one emergency where every minute matters. Save this post and share it with another dog owner.

What is the strangest thing your dog has ever eaten?

A remote control?
Something mysterious from the backyard that you still don’t want to think about? 😳

This is a judgment-free zone—we know dogs make some truly questionable culinary decisions. 😂

⚠️ A serious reminder: If your dog eats an unknown mushroom, medication, chemical or suspected toxin, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service immediately. Don’t wait for symptoms to appear.

What an amazing day this past Saturday at EPS Training Associates in Powassan!

Kruger and I had such a great time tracking under judge Maureen Fielding. The weather was perfect for tracking and the fall sceneries were spectacular in that area. Carol one of the wonderful volunteer track layers, laid out a beautiful track for Kruger.

Kruger is definitely a tracking dog!(follows the track no problem, nose to the ground, figures out the scent cones).We did not get our TDX (tracking Dog Excellence) title this time and this was a real learning experience.
We need to work our start instead of eating grass. Once he stopped eating grass and got started he tracked beautifully and figured out all corners except one. The judge Maureen gave me some great feedback.

We will keep tracking as you know “Practice Makes Perfect!”

We plan to keep up our training this fall and winter. We will be back next year for that TDX.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make this event possible. What an amazing group of volunteers!
